I proposed this idea in another thread but I'll put it here so everyone can see it.

There are several debates now about whether or not the interface should say USD or BitUSD. CNY or BitCNY. Interest or Yield.

I think the answer is to isolate the problem. Developers can make the interface entirely customizable over time starting with the labels. If the user can rename their BitAssets to anything they want, and can rename interface components to anything they desire, then all legal issues, political issues, or marketing issues, can be resolved through decentralization and customization.

If you want to be bold you could use a skin which uses the labels you want. If you want to be a bit less bold you could use a skin which switches the labels around so that it looks like pokemon cards are BitAssets.

In this way it would no longer be a problem for the Bitshares team to worry about. They could focus on writing code and let the artist and marketing community make custom skins. Just as long as people know how each BitAsset operates and what it is tracking then it doesn't matter what people call it and artists can decide to call it different things in different countries.

General Discussion / Time to convince BitPay to adopt BitUSD.
« on: September 07, 2014, 05:39:58 am »
Once interest is implemented and appears to work why not contact BitPay and whomever they are in competition with to see if they'll adopt BitUSD?

If BitPay refuses then go to their competition and offer the technology to them. If both refuse then it's time to consider starting a competitor service. It has to be made easy for organizations to accept BitUSD.

Proof of Work has a single point of failure around chip/hardware makers.

Assume for a moment the metaphor that computation resources are "the land". The land is the true wealth of the cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin, Litecoin, Storj, etc.

While governments cannot tax what we have on our land, they can tax the land itself.

All governments have to do to control Proof of Work is tax the computation resources which make up the land. So there is no way to avoid taxes because they can tax the chips we use to generate Bitcoins which effectively gives them a percentage of ownership of whatever is produced by those chips.

They can't do this with Proof of Stake. They know with Proof of Work the miners are in an arms race where they always have to buy the latest chips so they can raise taxes as high as they like on the certain chips but not others so as to influence which cryptocurrency gets used. Effectively if we assume the winners are the cryptocurrencies which get taxed least then in my opinion a special purpose ASIC chip which does nothing except mine Bitcoins/Litecoins is certainly the easiest to be taxed the most.

You tax general purpose chips and you effect the entire economy. So Intel/AMD chips will never be taxed. You tax ASICs and the only people who suffer are the cryptocurrency community of miners who use that particular chip. The chip isn't good for anything else so it would be just like taxing cigarettes.

General Discussion / Is Bitshares X a serious game?
« on: August 31, 2014, 09:51:33 am »
Here is an example of a virtual stock exchange https://secure.marketwatch.com/game/ .

But unlike that virtual stock exchange the Bitshares X stock exchange is a serious game with real money at stake.

Bitshares X can do the virtual stock exchange too but unlike the marketwatch game where if you do good trades and make millions of dollars you don't get to keep any of the money, with Bitshares and the birth of cryptocurrency you get to keep every penny.

The ultimate question the answer of which will decide if Bitshares X is a billion dollar industry or a potentially trillion dollar industry is whether or not we can find a way to turn virtual stocks into legal securities. In my opinion our community should make a serious effort to figure out ways to achieve that goal.

I think the way to achieve that is through integration with Wall Street, banks, and other mainstream financial institutions. They'll basically have to be willing to accept virtual "pegged" stocks as payment for the legal stocks. I think this is actually very possible because look at the success of BitPay?

The alternative if this isn't possible is people will make their millions on Bitshares X and be forced to cash out of it to move into the big leagues. People will be trading some pegged asset representing some new Silicon Valley company, then a big company like Facebook or Google will buy it and now the people trading the pegged BitAsset are going to want the real securities.

I think there is a limit to how much Bitshares X can scale before the greatest players seek diversification or to legally own assets. BitAssets only can go so far.

Am I the only one who sees this? If anything I hope Bitshares X can do something similar to market watch only if you win at the Bitshares X "serious game" you get to keep the money.

General Discussion / [Suggestion] Coin translation
« on: August 29, 2014, 04:16:04 am »
Coin translation

We need to enable the possibility of someone to send BitUSD to any coin address. Bitcoin, Litecoin, Dogecoin, etc.
  • Coin translation between cryptocurrency A (BitUSD) and cryptocurrency B (Bitcoin) allows us to spend BitUSD everywhere almost immediately.
  • Enhances the user experience almost immediately.
So as a user of Bitshares you could send BitUSD to a Bitcoin address, and the service translates BitUSD to BTC in the background. This in my opinion could enhance the power of BitUSD and allow us to spend our BitUSD anywhere where Bitcoin is accepted.

This might be possible with Ripple or with something else. Any ideas on how to do this?

My understanding is that users can issue their own BitAssets but the fees are quite high.
I was looking at coinmarketcap and noticed Lottoshares is #8 in market cap.

But there is no BitLTS? Suppose the LTS community wanted on our exchange. Shouldn't we have a way for them to collectively vote, pay the fee, and have their BitAsset issued by our delegates?

This way the level of interest can be tracked and only BitAssets which have high community interest and which will bring volume would be chosen. Something similar to what Big Vern does with the Cryptsy vote. http://blog.cryptsy.com/page/2

If you think this is a good idea vote yes. If you think it's a bad idea vote no. If you have suggestions to improve on it then please comment.

General Discussion / Gimme BitBTC pls!

Market forces are pushing the price of Bitcoin down. Until now it was not possible to short Bitcoins.
Can we short BitBTC? I would think so. That would give us an exclusive capability.

The sooner we get BitBTC online the sooner we can take our positions. Delegates?

General Discussion / Where is BitCNY?
« on: August 27, 2014, 05:08:22 am »
Most of the volume on Coinmarketcap selling is BTSX -> CNY.
So why wasn't BitCNY issued yesterday?

General Discussion / Suggestion: Investment guide for Bitshares X bulls
« on: August 25, 2014, 12:37:21 am »
I know we have a general investment guide but it's not very focused. This thread is for people who believe Bitshares is very underpriced, should be at least $1, and who want to invest accordingly though the Bitshares interface.

A lot of us here think the price of BTSX should be at least $1 (some even think $10 is reasonable) and do not plan to sell below a certain threshold. Since a lot of us are bulls wouldn't it be helpful if there was a guide showing us how to invest in our self interest using the currently confusing Bitshares X interface? A Youtube video could accomplish this if anyone wants to provide the example on the test net.

In Bitshares X right now there is no built in help guides, no tool tips, etc. What we need is a guide which explains in plain english without complicated terminology like derivatives shorts, margins, market making. All of this terminology has to be explained because even seasoned crypto traders who might grasp the concepts somewhat will never have seen any market like this before.

Visual step by step guides are needed

If I think Bitshares is worth at least $1 then how would I go about shorting BitUSD to reflect my prediction?  If BitUSD crashes in price vs BTSX as bulls expect then at what point is profit made? Is it made only if it crashes to the point where BTSX is equal to $1 in BitUSD or are profits made all the way to $1?

Here is a chance for bulls who understand the terminology to explain what they intend to do, why, and how it would work in the Bitshares interface. One idea I could suggest if the help guides are ever included in Bitshares X is that the user of Bitshares X should be able to choose an investment mode.

Something like: Bear mode, Bull mode, Market maker mode.

Then from there the interface should adjust to the mode they are in to make it easier for the user. As it is now it's very powerful but it also seems very easy to mess up due to the interface having a lot going on. Having different modes would reduce complexity and help to adjust the interface to the needs of different psychological mind states of investors. In the future if there are information feeds then they would be tailored to these different modes.

The reason this is good is because the easier it is for people to figure out that they don't have to cash out anymore, they don't have to worry about fiat or even BTC anymore, the better it will be for all of our share prices. Less people will leave the ecosystem and if people get bullish it would reflect within Bitshares X.

Overstock could issue their giftcards directly on Bitshares as a User Issued Asset which represents Overstock giftcards.

Then we would purchase those giftcards on the Bitshares exchange just as we would purchase BitUSD or user assets. These giftcards would not be market pegged so Overstock would issue it themselves. These giftcards would be legal digital IOU tokens and treated as coupons or vouchers which anyone can send to a Ripple Gateway or to Gyft.

To make it all work the Bitshares community must collaborate with Gyft, Ripple, Stellar, and entice corporations to offer giftcards directly through the Bitshares platform. If we work at it we could possibly get several big companies to do it before the holiday season.

-edit-

BitAssets can also be made redeemable through a similar process. This could someday allow us to trade NASDAQ stocks and real world commodities on the Bitshares chain through the IOU process (and integration with brokerage firms) turn it into actual stocks. The reason that is impossible right now is political rather than technological. The SEC is doing everything in it's power to delay implementing the JOBS Act and Wall Street is not yet integrated into the Bitshares ecosystem.

A priority in my opinion should be to also build contacts in Wall Street. Making Bitshares X compatible with the FIX api through some kind of extension would be the way to go about it. In addition it might be a good idea for delegates to focus on building the necessary contacts, and getting whatever licenses needed to be actual stock brokers if it is possible.

General Discussion / Suggestion: BitUSD -> USD Ripple Gateway.
« on: August 21, 2014, 04:15:33 pm »
We have the capability at least in theory to set up a Gateway in Ripple which accepts BitUSD for real USD. Users would be able to transfer their BitUSD to that gateway and have it go directly into their bank accounts.

This would be a game changing feature so it should be a high priority to implement it.

https://ripple.com/guide-to-ripple-gateways/

If we can get a Ripple USD Gateway up and running then onto the assets like BitGold, BitBTC, BitLTC, all which could utilize Ripple the Ripple gateway.

So we should start with BitUSD -> USD but eventually AnyBitAsset -> AnyAsset. This would in theory allow people to exchange anything through these sorts of setups but I don't know how easy it is to set a Ripple Gateway up.

If it costs a lot of time and money to set up then lets crowdfund it. Offer a token on the Bitshares chain which people can buy and once it's set up then everyone can get paid something back in gifts.

General Discussion / P2P/F2F marketing, door to door, cold calls, emails
« on: August 19, 2014, 12:01:37 pm »
I think this part of the marketing campaign is missing and needs to go into effect.
We should facilitate and incentivize people who bring in new players into the ecosystem.

How can we do that? If Bitshares can be mined that is but one way, but we need others.

How about cold calling, emailing, facebook, etc?

We should have some standard material to help people come up with pitches, and show them the basics of cold calling or direct P2P marketing. How do we even bring the subject up to our peers who aren't interested in it?

General Discussion / Bitshares X risk analysis chart
« on: August 16, 2014, 04:04:14 pm »
In response to this blog post http://tpbit.blogspot.ca/2014/08/thoughts-on-delegated-proof-of-stake.html

Let's build a risk analysis chart for Bitshares X (DPoS)

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AoMhHK4BehGedHNCem8tMEVHSGJLN3BfTDBadzVfcGc#gid=0

After we fill this in with every risk we know and the controls then we can compare it to Bitcoin (PoW). Anyone is free to fill it in. Usually I keep this stuff internal but it's in the best interest that we all contribute to this and that all the information be in one place.

To compare to Bitcoin just look for the Bitcoin foundation's risk assessment.

https://bitcoinfoundation.org/resources/removing-impediments-to-bitcoins-success/

After our chart is complete we should turn it into an article which can go on a blog so that we can compare Proof of Work to Delegated Proof of Stake.
