Two machines are absolutely the way to go. I've tested various levels and the only thing that additional cores do at this point is slightly faster builds (if you do 'make j4').

The reason for the replay was that the asset permissions were initialized incorrectly in genesis (giving their owners no ability to use some of the new features).   Fortunately, the change was to re-initialize the genesis which simply increased the permissions and thus didn't require anyone else to change anything.

is the hash of the genesis not included in the chain's merkle tree? Doesn't this suggest that an attacker could misrepresent some genesis properties - lacking provable correctness?

I'm not sure which would be better.  They both have advantages and drawbacks.   I will help you out either way if you want to use the script.  I just want to be clear it is in its very early stages.  For example the reset if production falls below 50% has never been tested.  I am pretty sure it will work, but I would hate for you to rely on it and be let down.

I think it is worth to keep running a live testnet. Trying your script is probably just one of many benefits.
