Where: http://www.brookings.edu/events/2016/01/14-beyond-bitcoin-blockchain-disruptive-financial-technologies

What:

Public and media focus on bitcoin has been on the virtual currency itself, but a key innovation is the ‘distributed ledger” or “blockchain,” the technologies that undergird bitcoin that allow a payment system to operate in a decentralized way without banks or other intermediaries. No matter what happens with bitcoin, the currency, this technological innovation has enormous potential and raises a host of policy questions. We are seeking to foster conversation among industry leaders and pioneers, policymakers, regulators (past, present and future), banks and other providers of conventional financial services and consumer/privacy advocates and identifying key issues and chokepoints.

AGENDA:

(Note: All morning sessions are invitation-only, but are made available to the public via live webcast.)

8:30 AM -- Session 1: Impact of Blockchain/Distributed Ledger on Financial Services & Payment Systems
How might distributed ledger technology transform financial services – particularly the payments systems -- over the next ten years? What are the biggest hurdles or uncertainties? What are the tensions between incumbents and disruptive start-ups? What are the most important developments to watch for in the next 12-24 months?

Speakers: Barry Silbert, Digital Currency Group; Charley Cooper, R3CEV; Brad Peterson, NASDAQ

10:15 AM -- Break

10:30 AM -- Session 2: Policy Questions Raised by Blockchain/Distributed Ledger Innovations in Financial Services and Payment Systems
What are the key risks and opportunities? What are the key questions that policymakers need to address – and which policymakers and when? What are the challenges all this poses to the existing payments system and how do we cope with them?

Speakers: Michael Barr, Univ of Michigan (former Treasury); Jeff Stehm, Promontory (former Federal Reserve); Anne Wallwork (Treasury)
