0.4.23.1
Just downloaded it today.

Sounds like something that keeps happening to me. If you reboot the client, does that fix it (temporarily)?

I think the end compromise that will be made is that delegates can outsource their block signing to someone else. The block signer cannot control or change the reward and it is sent directly to the real delegate, but he can get paid a fixed rate for his services automatically.

It would help, but stakeholders whould have still no (direct) control over who is signing blocks for the delegate, correct?
Therefore I would still be in favour of a complete separation of roles.

I've been thinking this too.

after hesitating for farrrrrrrrr too long I finally pulled the trigger and got 1.14 conversion. I like having 15 more btsx/pts now than waiting 2 years for them to mature. I'm feeling more secure in my decisions to go all in on btsx as I think any major DAC after Nov 5th is more likely to utilize the BTS snapshot than the PTS snapshot like PLAY will be doing. plus I still have my DNS and VOTE that will vest and give me a nice little nest egg to sit on for the long term.

Thanks biophil, this helped give me enough of a push to finally do what needed to be done.

Awesome, glad to see someone benefitted from this!

Is there going to be some way around this implemented where the holder gets one transaction to send it to himself before they are frozen until they mature?
You can keep it there ... there will not be a inactivity fee ...
though your genesis stoke is NOT actively voting ..

It's a pretty significant security issue. If PTS keys are compromised, then genesis stakes are compromised.

BitShares PTS / Re: All Protoshares stolen from my wallet
« on: November 01, 2014, 10:37:34 pm »
For the record, did you import the wallet or pts keys to other wallets? If so, which ones?

I am curious about that also, as well as what did the anti-virus found, if anything?

Also where did the money on the BTSX chain went?

When I look at the ledger it says it went to "UNKNOWN"    .   How could that be?

I quick scanned my computer for virus using AVAST and didn't have any viruses.   I will do a deep scan and let you know.

Here's a very important question, I'm not sure why nobody has asked it yet:

When you imported your PTS wallet into BTSX, did you make any transactions afterwards? If you did not make any transactions, then your BTSX balance was never moved out of its place on the genesis block, where it had the same private key as your PTS balance. Then if anybody stole your PTS private key, they would have access to your BTSX balance.

If this is what happened, then our community is to blame for not having a solid best practices manual for importing balances.

Where do you store your PTS wallet.dat file? Is it encrypted?

Damn, educatedwarrior. I'm very sorry about this. I do hope to convince you that this isn't a Bitshares problem; it's a private key security problem, which is common to all cryptocurrencies.

As far as BitcoinerS's proposal, I'm all for it. I'm skeptical that you'll be able to effectively compete with BTS (I just can't bring myself to say the word "superDAC" - it's way too jl777 for me), but I don't see any harm in trying. If you actually can pull off this symbiosis, it could be pretty great. I will plan on picking up some cheap post-snapshot shares, anyway.

The harsh reality is, if you're open source (which is a requirement to most), then BTS shareholders will vote to copy every single feature you implement that works at creating value for your DAC in some way.

People always say this, but I suspect it's far less true than you'd expect. The reality is that people get emotionally attached to their pet ideas and this makes them very resistant to copying effective approaches from different communities. Take Nxt's stance on bitAssets, which can mostly be summarized by "scam ponzi scam the Larimers hate babies!" Nxt's entrenched ideas about how crypto should work kept them from recognizing the power of the bitAsset, so they're missing their chance to implement something similar.

General Discussion / To PTS holders: trade for BTS right now at a discount
« on: November 01, 2014, 02:58:07 pm »
Right now, PTS is trading on Bter at 0.00514, while BTSX is at 0.0000447. One PTS entitles you to about 100 to 105 BTS after Nov 5, but these BTS will not be immediately liquid. What this means: If you sell your PTS now and buy BTSX, you'll get about 15% more BTS after the snapshot than you would if you held PTS; in addition, these BTS will be immediately liquid so you won't have to wait through the 2 year vesting period.

I've already converted all my PTS to BTSX, but I thought I'd point this out to people who haven't yet - I want to sell PTS for BTSX right now so bad that I hope someone gets to do it. :)

General Discussion / Re: Capital Infusion question
« on: October 31, 2014, 11:12:00 pm »
Let's say somebody wants to invest $10MM into BTS. Let's say that BTS stakeholders want to honor that investment. Do we currently have a system that allows for this kind of capital infusion? Or is all the 'capital infusion' that takes place 'time and skills of hired delegates'?

Would somebody buying $10MM worth of BTS be the answer? I'm thinking not, because that's just value changing hands, right? The new holder of that $10MM worth of BTS isn't being hired, and probably doesn't bring any time/skills to the table.

Is there any way we can 'sell new shares' and have that new money be given to delegate operations? All on the blockchain?

Interesting question... one thing is that if someone buys $10M of BTS, that would drive up the price of BTS, which would increase delegate pay. It's not the exact effect you're talking about, but it's at least qualitatively equivalent.

General Discussion / Re: Knowing when to stop
« on: October 31, 2014, 11:04:45 pm »
Once turning complete scripting is implemented in the SuperDAC, how will it be different than Etherium is trying to be?

It will have the benefits of Ethereum while ALSO having all the benefits of Bitshares.  (DPoS, TITAN, speed, bitAssets, etc).
yhea .. they are still discussing POW .. and honestly .. I don't see a different way of distributing their initial stake as they just don't have PTS/AGS .. just their IPO ..

Sounds like a PTS/AGS sharedrop is in order... ;)

This is just one of the oddities of the AGS-style auction. The most risk-averse way to invest is to donate some equal amount every day. If you're donating 1 BTC, send in 0.1 per day for 10 days.

If you're a small investor there's just not much else you can do. If you're a whale I guess you could donate a large amount in the morning hoping to scare everybody else off for that day, but even that is fairly risky.

General Discussion / Re: Longtime Investor - I am out
« on: October 31, 2014, 10:50:54 pm »

1. Don't invest more that you can afford to lose.

2. Hold for two years.

3. Have a divesting strategy and stick to it.

Every time I see your posts I reverentially imagine them coming from an elderly sage... your username lends you immediate credibility :) as always, thanks for the cool-headed investment advice.

I think you will run into problems when parsing TITAN transactions ... as the private key is in the browser .. and you need to scan ALL transactions if they are intended for you ..

Either you focus on the 'mail' protocol which will be used to announce transactions for the lightweight client soon .. or you will only be able to work with non-TITAN transactions .. either way .. the project can lead to a killer-app!! +5%

Mail will be used for this?? How did you learn that?

Can't speak for xeroc, but there was a conversation on the forum between bytemaster and drltc a while back when bytemaster mentioned this is what mail is about. Not necessarily the same thing as KeyMail, afaik.

Technical Support / Re: New user help re. Wallets, PTS and Investing

Hi thank you for your reply,
You have cleared a few things for me, I still don't fully understand block chains, assets etc as this is my first venture into cryptocurrency and indeed stocks/shares type of system but once I'm in I will try and learn more.
I got called into work so didn't get to buy in today so will be tomorrow, regarding the rebound, that was my concern with leaving it so I will go as much in as I can. It's payday in 2 weeks so more expendable cash will be available but it's a shame I can't use a credit card on exchanges.

I will look into the backup further as well.

Once again thank you and look forward to being part of this community
 :)

Regards

Scott

Cool. I think you're doing exactly the right thing; you can't learn how this stuff works unless you jump in and try it. I only just got into crypto a year ago, and it's been a spectacularly exciting adventure ever since :)

General Discussion / Re: How do margin calls work these days?
« on: October 30, 2014, 04:28:32 pm »
There are still bids above the call price... so the call has not been triggered.   The feed price protects only when there are no bids above it.

There are ~$10K BitUSD for sale at above the margin call price.... once those are purchased a margin call will execute.

Cool, thanks for the quick response. I wish I'd known that before this morning's price crash. :)
