General Discussion / Re: NXT forks BitShares 2.O mojo! goes for scalability
« on: February 25, 2016, 07:36:21 am »
Reading the thread it seems like some holders and developers are leaving. jl777 is one of them. Here's his farewell post https://nxtforum.org/index.php?topic=10828.msg210601#msg210601

Many also seem to be worried about a bloated blockchain, restrictions of java and eventual slowness of the relational database.

Just a few observations

Would being a bitcoin / ethereum sidechain reduce bitshares security?

If the value of btc held in multisig by witnesses becomes significant compared to their stake in bitshares, wouldn't they have the incentive to collude and take the btc and other possible coins like eth.

General Discussion / 30k USD challenge for verifiable mobile coupon system
« on: February 12, 2016, 10:18:25 am »
I just bumped into a challenge on innocentive for something that could be done on bitshares. They require only a written theoretical proposal. Here's the brief:

Quote
Challenge Overview

Coupons have been used as a marketing tool for more than a century. With the advent of mobile devices, manufacturers can now offer consumers a different way to access coupons besides clipping or printing them. In theory, mobile coupons are easy to access and manage, however in practice, they are not always simple to redeem, both for the consumer and the retailer. Mobile coupons can be delivered in a variety of ways (e.g. email, SMS, application). Following receipt of the coupon, the consumer must then redeem it at a retail location. This can involve a visual inspection, scanning a barcode, or linking to a Point-of-Sale device. For direct brand to consumer mobile coupons, there is currently no way to validate or expire a mobile coupon at the point of purchase, so retailers are hesitant to accept them due to concerns about reimbursement. Therefore, the Seeker (a large manufacturer of consumer packaged goods) is looking for solutions that will decrease fraud, while being easily implemented by the retailer.

Submissions to this Challenge must be received by 11:59 PM (US Eastern Time) on March 11, 2016. Late submissions will not be considered.

This is a Theoretical Challenge that requires only a written proposal to be submitted. The Challenge award will be contingent upon theoretical evaluation of the proposal by the Seeker.

To receive an award, Solvers will not be required to transfer their exclusive IP rights to the Seeker. Instead, Solvers will grant to the Seeker a non-exclusive license to practice their solutions as further described in the Terms of Use.

The challenge is here:

General Discussion / Re: I just sold all my Bitshares!
« on: January 15, 2016, 09:05:39 am »
So why don't people just buy bitUSD on the DEX if they want BTS to go up but are afraid of losing money (denominated in FIAT)? Then they could easily convert back if it starts to look promising.

Or if you happen to own some oil, you could pay your electricity bill with it  8)
I would also like to sell my time for a basket currency.

Isn't voting for a proxy some form of voter apathy?

Technical Support / I'm an apathetic voter
« on: January 08, 2016, 10:23:56 am »
I would like to vote for a witness, but it's very hard to get any overview of what my choices are. In the UI I can see who are chosen at the moment, but I find it very hard to make sense of the alternatives in the forum. There seem to be lots of outdated (are they?) delegates and old threads. Threads are good for conversations, but useless in this case. The time needed to get a clear picture of what's going on just isn't justified if your stake is small like mine.

Is there a wiki page with a list and brief description about the witnesses? I would make responsible voting actually possible.

Actually this applies to committee members and to some degree worker proposals too. A good wiki page with a list of each proposal and a brief description + link to more info would greatly reduce my voter apathy.

General Discussion / Re: Someone Give Me a Reason To Keep Holding BTS
« on: January 08, 2016, 08:17:40 am »
I don't know why I expected this project to be further along. Maybe I thought it was an actual business that was being cultivated, but I realize now that is not the case. It doesn't matter what the underlying software can do or not, CNX can't get funding, they can't produce a competitive exchange and don't know the market they are entering into. Bitshares, if looked at as a company, can't be run by a community of individuals that do not know or entirely trust each other. I don't have the answers for how to turn things around, but I see the same mistakes continually being made and I don't have a reason to stay anymore.
Complaining is easy, but if you put things in the right perspective you might have the reason to hold. You might not actually know how hard it is to bring something completely new to market and create a profitable business. Here are some brilliant people working and trying to make something sustainable and profitable, and it's still way too early to tell which crypto's will succeed in the end. No cryptocurrency is actually used (arguably) in the real world yet, other than for speculation, so there is no reason to be upset if bitshares isn't. When bitshares succeeds, you will make a profit too -by just holding. You could listen to the hangouts and Beyond Bitcoin and notice how smart the people working for you are.
I my eyes the best things about bitshares are 1) It has the most sustainable long-term funding/incentive model of any crypto-project and 2) It has the most impressive technology. What a combination actually! Just think about NXT. What will be the long term incentive to keep developing the platform once the major stakeholders have made all the profit they can? Now it might seem good, but it will be interesting to see where it goes when it gets harder to make profit. The long-term funding model of Ethereum isn't clear either. They actually just hope for the best, like bitcoin. Bitshares has an actual plan.
One more reason to hold bitshares is to concieve some business that utilizes cryptocurrencies. If I was to create a business today, which needed a cryptocurrency, I would try to implement it on bitshares first because it is the most efficient (cheapest, quickest), it has an internal exchange (broader market, less risk), and it has a long term plan (less risk again). Those are three crucial elements, which set bitshares apart from most other crypto's.

General Discussion / Re: Regarding MAS and my Vision
« on: January 02, 2016, 04:18:49 pm »
Sorry about the sidestep, but in reply to this:

@bytemaster: do you think we can use the MAS concept to help the open source
community out of their usual funding issue? Lot's of small and great projects
have no means to fund their their work (even if it only was a THANKS token)

I started to learn coding so that I could do something about an idea I have for funding open source projects. It would use bitshares. It's here: https://bitsharestalk.org/index.php/topic,11540.msg152143.html#msg152143

Thanks! So in short; If I believe BTS will go up, I have an incentive to provide liquidity. Otherwise not?

71
  • Borrowing EUR is the right / only way to create EUR, is it?
  • Suppose I borrow EUR. If I provide liquidity, I must place a sell order for less than I just "payed"? At least looking at the chart it seems so to me.
  • If I sell the EUR I just borrowed into existence, it is still backed by my previous collateral, and I still have the risk of a margin call?
  • If BTS goes down, I risk getting margin called because of holding EUR, in which case I pay a price for taking a risk?
  • If BTS goes up, I miss the train because of providing liquidity?

So what's my incentive? How can I provide liquidity while minimizing my risk? Even better, can I make profit by providing liquidity?
I'm a small guy with only 200€ to play with, but it might be better than nothing. Maybe some bigger guys could help out too if they understood better, so please help me understand in layman terms.

72
Collateral requirement is 3x!!
So getting people to use bitUSD would be a good thing!

There doesn't seem to be any "light client" at the moment. I did some googling. Is there any in the works? A blockchain.info -type service offering an API to the blockchain would do also. The only features needed are creating the keys, checking the balance and making a transaction.

73
So if there were 100'000'000'000 bitUSD, it would be irrelevant to the price of bitshares?

74
Does buying bitUSD directly on BTER support the price of bitshares? I don't understand the mechanism yet.

75
I really like it! Also the name is great :)

It could also be extended to "donate to your favorite charity" (wikipedia, wikileaks, others)

Question: I understood that it would be a standard software application using crypto currencies as "money" to donate to the free software projects and having the "service run atop bitshares" would mean that it has bitUSD or other bitAssets as it's "money". Is that all correct? Or would "service run atop bitshares" mean that it is directly using the blockchain as an essential part of the software?

As for the fiat thing... I know that more sophisticated and easy to use fiat on ramps are in the making.
The name thing was a nice coincidence. I had obtained the domain earlier for another project, but I hadn't used it.

The software would "contain" or invoke a bitshares (or any coin) wallet. It would use bitUSD as a currency, but not be a DAC in any way. If that's what you asked. It only needs to check the current balance and send the transaction.

I would like to integrate donations to charities and other online services like you mentioned. Just how to obtain and verify the addresses is a question, and also how to make sure the user wants to include them all. I want to keep it as simple and convenient as possible, because I beleive that's what will lower the threshold to donating.

The fiat part will be the most inconvenient part of the whole experience, so I hope to focus on it...
