General Discussion / Re: Crowd Donations for Mike Hearn Hangout
« on: January 26, 2016, 07:47:45 pm »
*Update*
Mike Hearn has responded to my email.  Thanks, btw, @CLains for sending a second one--it really cannot be understated just how important it is that even one other person supported this--it very well might have made us stick out from the crowd and I applaud CLains for being the only one to have the inner drive to send such a supportive message.

With that said, though Mike declined at this time for the seeming reason that he didn't want to cause more waves than he already had.  However, we now have a direct link to contact him that we know works.  Also, we have him remembering the concept of "beyond bitcoin" just from seeing the email that he responded to.  In the future, these things give us a higher chance of bringing him onboard.  I responded to him telling him we greatly appreciate his bravery in bringing up topics we have largely felt outcasted for bringing up in the past and told him we understand how it feels to try to tell the truth to the community...not to hurt, but to help.

With this said, however, if you donated to this and would like to sell back your COPPERTICKET and SILVERTICKET please feel free to send them back for a full redemption of BTS.  If you do not redeem them, I will likely use them as a growing pool of carrots with which to bring other High Profile individuals on to speak with us.

As always, thanks for trusting me and thank you for the privilege of serving a community of core individuals who really do care about liberating tech.
If this can be done via this thread to help provide easy transparency, please do so.  If not, please post the link along with the amount you are sending back.

I am reaching out to all sorts of people every day.

My project is called Chateaux Joint Endeavor and can be found on the exchange: CHATEAUX

Thanks 38!  This is a good start!  Is there a link you can post for people to keep up with your progress?  https://sites.google.com/site/38ptswarrior/
Feel free to let us know of any other products/services/functionality bitshares offers!
I cannot change the content at the moment.

Because of lack of support I will stop my forum activity.

I don't want to risk losing my edge and am looking for a new community.

why? i have already asked you if we could show off your work for beyond bitcoin and you said no.  the offer is still open to post your interviews...cause i watch them :P

oh yummy.  @JohnnyBitcoin if technically feasible (should be) this is a great idea.  perhaps we could reach out to the blockstream guys and try to hire them on to build it :)

One thought that comes to mind though....why not use something like what seraph was going to build where it was a multisig gateway that essentially automates all that without a sidechain.

I reached out to cob.  Perhaps we can get him to come chat with us for an hour and tell of the journey thus far and plans going forward.  I suspect much of it was probably on legal fees...

This is a pretty hefty wish list.

I think a lot of it boils down to our UX needing to be disassociated from the coded processes. What I mean by this is, the limitations people are feeling in the current UX is due to it mirroring the processes and architecture of the underlying protocol.

If there was a focus on how people can easily understand something and then suit the experience to match that instead of attempting to re-educate them on 'the Bitshares way', I believe we would eliminate a good 90% of our barriers to entry.

The reason I think this approach has never been taken is because it has always been assumed that someone going from the web client to the CLI or light wallet should be able to navigate them all with the same understanding.. but that is just not so. Try asking a Windows user to open their command line to type something in and look at the expression on their face that says "What is a command line?"

Anyhow.. there is some great elements you pointed out here. How much of it can be supported by a Worker right now?  +5%

i dont disagree here actually donkey but id like you to take a look and see that many posts these days are not talking solutions and seem to go nowhere toward us actually CHANGING anything.  We need to discuss and be honest about our capabilities.  im simply saying that before you say we need a more compelling use case you recognize that the tech and bitcoin have met a face reality moment and have tx speeds and scalability issues known in crypto...and it hasnt stopped them from reaching out and making meaningful connections that have ended in 1st gen mined tokens that jettison past us in marketcap.

please dont take my message as saying we have to be idiotically and irrationally positive or we are harming bitshares.  im saying the honest damned truth...noone has as fast or scalable a blockchain. In terms of payment use cases that still puts us far ahead of other cryptos!

We have MANY things worth selling to the outside world and should never allow our considerations of ehat we lack serve as justification for not taking the bull by the horns.

Yep.  He gave us a list of selling points we could already have been using.  A great asset compared to us complaining.  Thank you @Empirical1.2.  I know it gets tough sometimes but any of us who got into this thinking it would be easy should have never got in in the first place. We are going to keep going and with people doing valuable things like this we have more we can use.

Now I still have to admit, however.  I am at a loss how you can compile a list like this yet still honestly say we have nothing we can approach others with...I mean you just basically made all your earlier points in this thread rrelevant with this post (which is respectable actually if you already know it and made a choice to fight the low marketcap demons) :D

 +5% Thanks

Well my earliers statements were because nearly everything on that list requires SmartCoins to be more tightly pegged. SmartCoin to Fiat will also add to the true cost of many services mentioned.

However it was you talking about the Emercoin & Factom approach that lead me to agree with you that from a marketing point of view you can also focus on the product and service 'potential'.

This is why I spend so much of my time thinking about Smartcoins, I personally think it's at the centre of what BitShares has to offer and getting those more tightly pegged is what's going to make investors and new developers believe that the potential of many of those products and services can be actualized.

@cass , would you consider placing it on our website as part of your current worker proposal?
Together with a couple of screen-shots of our GUI, this would be a very refreshing addition.
We could keep the webpage as it is but just add a dedicated section for non-technical newcomers with Empirical's text and some screenshots.

If this is outside the scope of your worker, I think this is worth a separate worker proposal and having it done by you or someone else who has the time.

Thanks, If you're going to use it on the site, feel free to add/remove products or change the text especially if any of the content isn't accurate/misleading.

@Empirical1.2  I realize this is off topic of this thread.. but I wanted to get your impressions since you seem to be expelling a great deal of brain power on Smartcoins.. what you think will bring the peg more inline with real world fiat.

Is it simply a chicken/egg situation if liquidity where someone is just going to have to step up and eat losses to try and pull all the other market traders inline to hold their trades within at least a 2% margin of the feed?

Or should the system change to where we put a ceiling on it and only allow the margins to go so far?

Is there something the committee could do in all this to make them work better?

Please forgive me if you have already stated such things and I have just forgotten or missed them and feel free to just cut and paste them if that is the case. :)

Personally I think BTS will benefit so much from tightly pegged Smartcoins that by supporting the peg we are not really eating a loss overall.

At the very least I think it's worth directing trading fees to dividends for the Shorts to bring them closer to the peg.

I think MAKER may fail because after two years/whenever, if the same market conditions persist Shorts will still be reluctant to come to the peg. (& we will have committed some of our future trading fees to Market Makers for past services rendered so won't be able to use that to incentivize them.)

My current thinking about how to get the Smartcoin peg tighter is here https://bitsharestalk.org/index.php/topic,21125.0.html

However there are people on here, obviously including BM himself who understand these problems better than me.

and there are people outside this forum we could be gaining interest from so they too can help us solve these probs.  but we cant tale the approach that we arent good enough.

let anyone interested in deving w/ blockchains see even the basic network capabilities (3sec tx times that get lower as the network grows, separations of power, nearly unlimited scalability...) and they will get interested.

these are things no other blockchain has...why not embrace them and tell people shamelessely that we need them to join us in our constant journey to find solutions for life liberty and property, and that we are always looking for people to join our cause and offer their solutions.

the point im making here is that we are sitting on groundbreaking tech....tightly pegged smartcoins or not.  dude bitshares is already so money!  Lets keep working on improving but dont that keep us from advocating and recruiting!

General Discussion / Re: Meanwhile - Ethereum quietly overtakes Litecoin
« on: January 25, 2016, 11:02:03 am »
I think they well deserve it. They have great ideas, great developers and did way better marketing it then we did.
And we need to get to the point that we have the same optimism and enthusiasm in our community as they have it in theirs.
Who's with me?

I think it's not that simple .
Crypto are risky investment object , it's not like any usual commodity where you can sell it like crazy by promotion , features and usage .

The only reason that a risky investment object can rise is because some capital is willing to risk their money and speculate on a return . Users are not gonna do that , they'll just pay petty fees and won't risk that much .

Even with Ethereum today, I don't think it's development, marketing that matters . Coding and marketing are cheap , Money is real .

That's why I also believe Bitcoin will still be the king in many years to come .

It's just like the argument against alt-coin in the beginning ----- No matter how good you are , people can copy it in one sec .  But what they can't copy , is the money behind it .

Just want to give everyone a little perspective here.  Bitcoin's core devs are receiving CENTRALIZED vc funding from Blockstream.  Ethereum's devs are receiving vc funding in exactly the same way---only through an apparently very wealthy individual from New York who owns a company called "Consensys".  Where is Bitshares' Dev funding?  Do people really care about decentralization or just being the new kings in a world of ash?
Answer:  most people just want the cash and the ash.  we need to reach people outside crypto---those who still have their wits about them enough to realize there is a larger purpose to our work here that will benefit all.

As a community I think it is important we recognize the realities of the crypto landscape---we need vc's and the only way to get them is to show off what we do have (which is by far not "nothing"...but which will become less valuable as we sit on our hands).

General Discussion / DarkSide or LightSide?
« on: January 25, 2016, 10:49:04 am »
I have been spending alot of time lately reading on these forums posts about how much bitshares is "lacking" and have been struck by the incessant nature of this concern.  So I thought we might do a little exercise to realign our perspectives...

What does bitshares have RIGHT NOW that other cryptos don't offer?  Instead of allowing ourselves to be consumed by "what we don't have", what assets does bitshares have?  This can be projects (like Sharebits.io and Beyondbitcoin.org/net, MetaExchange, Blocktrades, Electron, CCEDK, OPENLEDGER, Bunker Labs, Cryptonomex, Gamebet.gg, Dr. Evans writing white papers on MAS...jeez guys I can do this for too long and I would MISS MOST OF THEM!) or it can be core functionality that nearly all altcoins cannot offer...

Please let us all take a breath focus and think about at least one thing bitshares HAS.  Let's get out of this mindset of scarcity and start thinking with a mindset of abundance--because we DO have an abundance of many valuable things at our disposal if we choose to use them instead of sticking ourselves in an infinite loop of thinking only of what we don't have.

I feel like I'm talking to a buddy with no self-confidence who is sitting next to a single lady who would be perfect for him...just saying "Dude...talk to her!  You are not perfect, but you have so much going for you---if only you could see it!"

Outreach outreach outreach.  That is really what most this boils down to imho.
We don't have all these features because we are ashamed of showing off what we do have to people who have the eyes to see it AND also recognize the weak spots where they might find and exploit the profit potential of building better solutions than those that exist.  We spend way too much time on this forum asking why and not nearly enough time simply acting to bring more eyes to what we HAVE accomplished (which if people knew about it...many would love!).

I do agree with you on the privacy and other things, but the fact of the matter is that without a bunch of developers and entrepreneurs who know we exist (isn't that the first step???) we are going to be waiting waiting waiting to make sure all this gets built...if it is built at all.

And before people start saying "we don't have a product that is ready"....remember Ethereum sold themselves to Developers worldwide by OUTREACH. And a YellowPaper...which is much less than we currently have.
