For fun, I have been thinking about how Bitcoin (or any cryptocurrency, really) could facilitate a better model for democracy.  I describe a crude model I devised here:
http://www.reddit.com/r/Bitcoin/comments/37suw8/how_might_bitcoin_facilitate_a_better_model_for/

I lurk this forum and value the opinions of people here, so I thought I would provide the link in case anyone is interested in reading it.

Ok, thanks.  When can we expect 0.4.25 to be released?

Thanks Xeroc, I have downloaded the latest version of Bitshares (0.4.24).  I don't have any of the previous problems, except now the client does not connect at all.  The bars at the bottom right indicate varying numbers of network connections each time I reload, but the words read "not connected".

I have let the client remain open for hours, but it never syncs to allow me to make transactions.  Please Advise.

I donated Bitcoin to AngelShares from two separate wallets.  I imported one of these and claimed my BTSX a few weeks ago.  I just tried to import the other.  I think it worked but strange things are happening with the BitsharesX client, making it unusable:

1.  I transferred the balance of the first wallet.  This is indicated in the transactions, but my total balance still includes this value.  I presume this is because he sync has not caught up yet, however...

2.  As the BitsharesX client syncs, it becomes more and more unstable.  My account information seems to disappear, I can't transfer any BTSX, and it eventually freezes.  I have to force quit.

3.  When I open the client after the force quit, it sometimes shows the correct balance, but I can't transfer any BTSX - my username and robot are gone from the transfer screen.  The sync timer starts to fall further and further behind for about a minute, then stops moving all together.  I have to force quit.

I've spent hours trying to figure this out.  Can anyone help?  I've tried re-installing the BitsharesX client and replacing my wallet data, but this doesn't work.  The same sequence of problems occurs.  I'm running on Windows 7 x64.

What about boardgames?  There are free-to-play boardgame sites with great games like Settlers of Catan, Puerto Rico, Ticket to Ride, etc.

General Discussion / Re: help! my multibit can't import to bitshares x
« on: October 28, 2014, 04:00:27 pm »
I'm having trouble importing my AGS donated from Multibit into the Bitshares X client.  Can anyone help?

I have tried importing the keys from the wallet, with Multibit selected.  When I press the Import Wallet button, nothing happens.

I have tried Importing WIF Key.  To do this, I saved my Multibit private key without a password, then opened it in notepad and copied and pasted the key into the field in the BitsharesX client.  It said it was successful, but no BTSX is in my balance.  I tried the blockchain rescan command, but that didn't do anything.  The client always says "Catching Up...processing block x of y".  It never seems to be fully caught up, if that indicates anything.

What am I doing wrong?

Please confirm that those of us who have not yet claimed the BitsharesX we are entitled to based on AGS donations can wait and simply claim Bitshares instead once the conversion happens.

General Discussion / Re: Proposed Allocation for Merger
« on: October 21, 2014, 07:26:17 pm »
I haven't yet claimed the BitsharesX I am entitled to based on my AngleShares donations.  Can I continue to put this off or will I have difficulty claiming my share once the merger has happened?  The reason I haven't claimed them yet is that the client doesn't work on my older iMac and I haven't had the time to upgrade it yet.

9
I have a somewhat related question.  I haven't claimed the BitsharesX I am entitled to from my Angle Shares donations yet.  The reason for this is two-fold: the BitsharesX client doesn't run on my Mac (OSX 10.6.8) and I don't know of a simple paper storage method available for when I do claim my BitsharesX.  It will probably take me a full day or two to upgrade my operating system and sort these issues out, which I don't have the time for and don't foresee having the time for anytime soon.

So the question, aside from this proposed inactivity fee, is there a problem with waiting to claim my BitsharesX?  Will it always be waiting for me to claim it or are there plans to burn or redistribute it after a period of time?  I can't imagine there are, but I want to be sure.

As far as I know your BTSX is safe except for the potential of a 5% annual inactivity fee.
(Though I would recommend claiming them when it becomes possible possible for you to avoid the worry and as it helps decentralise the DAC when your stake is occasionally voting. Also don't forget you also have shares in BitShares DNS & BitShares Music etc.)

Thanks, yes I have my eye on the other DACs.  Bitshares Music in particular is an incredible idea.

General Discussion / Re: Sports Betting DAC based on BitsharesX
« on: October 02, 2014, 11:10:08 pm »
You're right, sports "pools" is a better term.  Yes, I suspect there would be something akin to the PTS dump after a snapshot when the season ends, then it would slowly build back up in preparation for the next season.  Values would probably peak at some point before the end of the final game in a series, then drop off quickly once the game is decided definitively.  Timing your buys/sells would just be part of the fun, I guess.

General Discussion / Sports Betting DAC based on BitsharesX
« on: October 02, 2014, 10:29:22 pm »
I'll preface by saying that I don't really watch sports or gamble (unless you consider trading cryptocurrencies gambling).  Nonetheless, it occurred to me that a fork of BitsharesX might work as a sports betting DAC.  The only change would be the names of the assets and the marketing.  Each chain would be a professional sports league like the NHL, NBA, NFL, etc. and the "assets" would be each team in the league.  Just as the assets in BitsharesX track the relative value of their non-digital counterparts, the team "assets" of NHLshares for example might be expected to dynamically track an abstract valuation of each team relative to the others.  If marketed accordingly, users should expect team valuations to increase/decrease relative to the others based on how the teams are performing in the league.  Users can buy in and trade valuation between teams throughout the series, realizing profits or losses based on how their team picks do.  It could get quite interesting with high volume trading and dramatic swings in team valuations based on the results of key games.  Furthermore, in this fantasy world with cross chain trading, you could even go long and short on various teems between different sports.

Since the peg is working for bitassets, it seems this could work too based on the same principals.  Such a DAC could be a popular gateway into the Bitshares ecosystem.

I don't have the knowledge/skills to make this project a reality (even though it is just a clone of BitsharesX), I just thought it was simple enough to work and wondered if others think it has potential (or if the idea has already been considered/debated).

Technical Support / Re: BitsharesX client crashes in Mac OSX 10.6.8
« on: August 27, 2014, 09:02:01 pm »
That error seems very low level... before any of our code actually runs.

We don't have a 10.6.8 machine to test on...

Yes, that makes sense; the error happens immediately before anything loads.  I'm afraid I'm not very computer savvy.  I suppose I'll have to upgrade to Mavericks when I can find the time.  In the mean time, if anyone knows how to work around this, I would appreciate it.

Technical Support / BitsharesX client crashes in Mac OSX 10.6.8
« on: August 27, 2014, 08:33:41 pm »
The BitsharesX 0.4.8-a client crashes immediately when I try to open it.  I have tried 0.4.8-b with the same result.  Can anyone tell me how to resolve this?  I would prefer not to upgrade my operating system, by the way.

Thanks in advance!

I can't even open the load screen.  The application crashes before it opens -- Says "quit unexpectedly".  Can anyone help me with this?  I'm running OS X 10.6.8.  Might this be the problem?  I'm reluctant to upgrade to Mavericks because I hear it slows everything down considerably and my iMac is already about 4 years old.
