General Discussion / Expanding the Role of Delegates
« on: October 09, 2014, 03:24:15 pm »
During Dan's meet-n-greet lunch we got into a discussion about the role delegates will play. At the time I was arguing that delegates don't know each other and don't want to know each other. However, I have since been pondering that position and think it is incorrect. Currently with the small market cap and small volumes a delegate's role is mainly a light IT position with some contributions like SVK's block/delegate sites, evangelism, etc.

However as traffic increases and 3i's role in the "running" of the BitSharesX business fades out someone, or a collection of someones, will need to make management decisions. I know theFu[zz].. has setup some Delegate Mumble sessions and maybe this has already been discussed.

What are the thoughts of other delegates? Do you think we should work to form a more cohesive management structure or stay separate?

My thinking is that there are delegates better suited to an IT role, others to marketing, and others to working out ways to make deals with external parties (for example payment processors). Having delegates geographically diverse would be a huge benefit here.

What say you, Delegates?

Meta / Mmm...dogfood (bitUSD/BTSX)
« on: October 08, 2014, 05:42:30 pm »
The top price is quoted in BTC per BTSX. Can we have it bitUSD per BTSX instead? Since bitUSD peg is holding nicely I feel this would further decouple BTSX from BTC.

General Discussion / Video of Dan's LV Keynote
« on: October 07, 2014, 08:57:41 pm »
I have the speech and the Q&A recorded. It's 3.2GB so it'll take a while to get it up on YouTube. I'll update this post with a link when it's ready. It was great!

Can we have this list the highest bid?  Currently it shows 0.00002 or something similar when the actual highest bid is 0.034ish (USD/BTSX).

I'd like to add a get_highest_bid(quote, base) to my bot.

General Discussion / What the Fork??
« on: September 22, 2014, 11:38:19 am »
One of the good things about this alpha stage is that it's allowing the delegates to shake out system issues, build tools around their delegates, and better understand the technology.

So in that spirit I'm looking for some insight into what happened a few hours ago that caused me to miss 16 consecutive blocks. Is it related to the forks in the list after the picture? I noticed that after my fork the next delegate has a huge latency spike. Am I on the wrong fork because of them or visa versa? Why did it eventually figure itself out?

General Discussion / Base vs Quote Currency
« on: September 19, 2014, 02:56:21 am »
Can someone tell me what base and quote currencies mean? While writing my bots I spent a lot of time debugging method calls because there was an inconsistent use of these two words. For example the bitUSD:BTSX market. Is the base currency USD and the quote currency BTSX?

Example:
  • In the Market Maker the quote is USD and the base BTSX.
  • In the method wallet_market_order_list base is USD and quote is BTSX.
From market_maker.py in 15-RC1:
Code: [Select]
        usd_balance = self.client.get_balance(self.name, quote)
        btsx_balance = self.client.get_balance(self.name, base)

From help files:
Code: [Select]
wallet_market_order_list <base_symbol> <quote_symbol> [limit] [account_name]                          List an order list of a specific market
List an order list of a specific market

Parameters:
base_symbol (asset_symbol, required): the base symbol of the market
quote_symbol (asset_symbol, required): the quote symbol of the market
limit (int64_t, optional, defaults to -1): the maximum number of items to return
account_name (account_name, optional, defaults to "ALL"): the account for which to get the orders, or 'ALL' to get them all

General Discussion / SPAM - A cost of success
« on: September 11, 2014, 01:55:02 am »
So now that we're gaining a lot of attention we're going to be increasingly attracting the attention of the script kiddies.

Thoughts on preventing us getting swamped with this sort of thing? I am loath to use a newbie thread you need to somehow graduate from like bitcointalk (been a member over a year and still can't post lol).

Our spammer tonight is going to be the first of many. I'm looking at you, Bitsapphire :) .

and I can not lie. You other traders can't deny.
When a 10s block shows up with round transaction in your face
You get rich.

Ya, won't quit my day job :P. Still, this is the biggest block I've seen go by.

General Discussion / bitAsset to Asset - Completing the Circle
« on: September 09, 2014, 04:57:05 pm »
Since a centralized exchange operates a bit like BitSharesX (in that when trading you're not actually trading on the respective blockchain of the asset your trading) I think BitSharesX could be a full service exchange by including payout.

Since we already have node servers and chain servers what if we had asset servers. Basically it's like a chain/node server except it also holds the blockchains of other main assets like BTC and PTS. When you want to bring money into the exchange you ask an asset server for a deposit address in whatever chain you're coming from and it'll deposit bitAsset of the same type into your account, minus a transaction fee. When you want to cash out it's the same operation in reverse: You supply the external wallet address and this gets sent to the asset server which handles the transaction minus a transaction fee.

One big issue: The asset server's reserves on the other chains wouldn't always be sufficient to cover withdraws. Perhaps the client could have a "Convert Asset" tab and it'd list the reserves available of each coin supported by the asset servers. If a server doesn't have enough reserves for you then just do what you do now - got to an exchange.

Thoughts?

General Discussion / bitUSD/BTSX Role Reversal
« on: September 09, 2014, 04:25:01 pm »
The current paradigm is that someone buys BTSX and then trades it for whatever bitAsset they want, or hold it, etc. Once bitUSD is able to cash out directly via a service like OKPay, Coinbase, BitQuick, coin.mx all of a sudden BTSX just becomes another asset, shares in the BitSharesX exchange, and not currency  or a "coin" that it currently is and bitUSD will take over as the universal "coin" like BTC is now.

Will this pave the way for other companies to issue stock on BitSharesX? I hope so.

We seem to be on the rise again. I don't see any of the big contenders going down so I wonder if this is "new" money coming into the crypto ecosystem.

General Discussion / Tips for Keeping Up to Date on BitSharesX
« on: August 30, 2014, 09:47:39 am »
The forum is busy and moves fast. It's a full time job keeping up on all the posts and big events can get buried in threads that you may have otherwise not read or stopped following. Post up your tips for how you stay abreast of the goings on with BitSharesX and I'll add them to the list.

1) Create a shortcut to go to a list of Bytemaster's posts. You can scan it quickly and any event of importance will be written by or commented on by him: https://bitsharestalk.org/index.php?action=profile;area=showposts;u=5

2) Create a shortcut that goes directly to the Bank & Exchanges sub forum https://bitsharestalk.org/index.php?board=3.0
