General Discussion / Re: New accounts last 24h:
« on: June 17, 2015, 07:26:37 pm »
The network can handle it and so can graphene.

One thing we can do if the community approves is to only migrate names registered after June 8th if they were registered via faucet.bitshares.org.

There is no sense in allowing this squatter to bloat the genesis state for $100.

If you want to squat on all names then you can claim them *AFTER* BTS 2 has launched with new pricing.

I agree with fav - i.e. it's best to avoid changing the rules, however, it is aggravating to see someone doing this.

Which is the greater problem - bloat in the genesis state, or the fact that someone is squatting names?

Perhaps another option to consider would be to modify these names in BitShares 2.0, by prepending or appending something, like we are with the premium names? It'd be somewhat less harsh if we modify rather than omit the account names from BitShares 2.0.

edit: I do think it's almost a fundamental problem to retrospectively change the rules when dealing with blockchains. It goes against the grain of a large chunk of the philosophy, and can detract from people's confidence in the 'immutability' side of things. Can we therefore put something in place to prevent the problem from this point forward - some kind of restriction from now on, and let whomever is doing this keep what they have managed to grab up until now?

Random Discussion / Re: TonyK is Movie-Plot Threat Contest Winner

No amount of drama in the world of BitShares can dissuade me from courting the attention of my beloved tonyk. Not even if the timing of such behavior is seen by the entire community as inappropriate.

Just you remember, not only did I go through eye addition surgery, I had my antenna sawn off JUST TO PLEASE YOU!

Anyway, let's all head back to the 'What the fuck is this shit?! Cryptonomex blah blah blah' thread...

Random Discussion / TonyK is Movie-Plot Threat Contest Winner

See this from Bruce Schneier.

The contest was looking for a movie-plot threat which shows the evils of encryption.

Quote
On May 14, I announced the five semifinalists. The votes are in, and the winner is TonyK:

November 6 2020, the morning of the presidential election. This will be the first election where votes can be cast from smart phones and laptops. A record turnout is expected.

There is much excitement as live results are being displayed all over the place. Twitter, television, apps and websites are all displaying the vote counts. It is a close race between the leading candidates until about 9 am when a third candidate starts to rapidly close the gap. He was an unknown independent that had suspected ties to multiple terrorist organizations. There was outrage when he got on to the ballot, but it had quickly died down when he put forth no campaign effort.

By 11 am the independent was predicted to win, and the software called it for him at 3:22 pm.

At 4 the CEO of the software maker was being interviewed on CNN. There were accusations of everything from bribery to bugs to hackers being responsible for the results. Demands were made for audits and recounts. Some were even asking for the data to be made publicly available. The CEO calmly explained that there could be no audit or recount. The system was encrypted end to end and all the votes were cryptographically anonymized.

The interviewer was stunned and sat there in silence. When he eventually spoke, he said "We just elected a terrorist as the President of the United States."

Given the subject matter (Follow My Vote in mind) I wonder if this could possibly be 'our' tonyk.

I've been wondering by the way, on this forum does the use of an ampersand, e.g. '@tonyk' actually notify the forum member?

(This post was an absolute pig to compose on my phone! Sorry if it's gone wrong somewhere!)

Any stakeholders here want to promise not to sell their BTS if GS decided to compete by reimplementing all of our ideas?

Yes

FYI, 4pm EST is 8pm GMT

And this is 9pm British Summer Time - I hope nobody gets caught out by all this time zone and daylight saving malarchy!

Hi Mercury, and welcome to BitShares!

I just wanted to put a comment here to show that this problem has been solved in your other topic here, so others reading this don't need to respond here.

I'd like to point out that the changes vary significantly from region to region across the globe. The changes being discussed here are relevant in the United States.

So bear in mind, if you're not in the U.S., that the updates may not include the issues being discussed here.

If I find time, I'm going to go through the terms for the UK. It's annoying to have to do this, and I don't like what they're doing in the U.S. (so maybe I'll just close my account regardless)... >:(

edit: Well it seems we have it relatively good in the U.K. (and I think the whole of the E.U.?) - we can set our own communication preferences, and so opt out of surveys, newsletters, marketing etc.

hadrian: Thanks for your kind words, really appreciate it!  And thanks for pointing out the pricing bug, I've just fixed it now.  Turns out I missed out BTS while updating out prices the other day, it was completely unintentional, we're not trying to deceive people. :D

fuzzy: I'll be in touch soon!  Thanks. ;)

I thought it'd be something like that  :D
Soon after shapeshift added BitShares (I think it was with BitUSD) they had a similar problem for a very short while - except the price was out by orders of magnitude!

Anyway, I've bookmarked your website and will be looking out for news and updates.

Hello Will.

This looks promising. I've not come across ANY other services like this in the UK. I've found a small handful of places enabling purchase of bitcoin through the faster payments scheme, but none which offer these other cryptos. Sometimes it's a pain having a bank account denominated in GBP rather than Euros, so I'm glad you're doing this!

If you were to create a User Issued Asset on BitShares, I would probably buy some because I'd like to see you succeed. Your service is good for crypto in the UK, and very convenient for users.

I hope you do well, and it'd be great to see some collaboration between CryptoMate and BitShares.

P.S. I recommend taking fuzzy up on his offer of a hangout if you can

edit: perhaps you'd like to know - looking at your website, some of the prices on the homepage are very different to those quoted when it comes to buying...

206
That man's delivery makes him captivating. Who is he? We need him on-board BitShares! Can you imagine?!...

GET HIM IN A MUMBLE SESSION NOW FUZZY!!!

You do realize that most of the benefits will be the same for any other pegged crypto? If they don't charge a premium then it is game over. for us.

I just wanted to point out that it is in fact sumantso's statement you have quoted here bytemaster (a quote from sumantso pulled out of one of lil_jay890's posts).

208
This thread gives some details about what's going on with these bad delegates (in case you don't know what this is about, and you don't want to blindly follow bytemaster's request).

209
they just lifted blocks on certain bitcoin websites. stop hyping please and post in the correct category

Is there a guide somewhere as to what should go in each category?
I may have put this in 'general discussion' if I were posting it (or possibly marketing?), because it doesn't exactly seem like a random topic to me.
I'd have been rather disheartened with a curt reply, too...

media.bitscape   -   Mainly spending BTS delegate pay on traveling for fun! [added]

provisional.bitscape   -   Keeping company of media.bitscape on his vacations! [added]

The interview they did on Bitcoins and Gravy was pretty good though.
If I weren't already into BitShares, I'd have looked into it after listening to that LTB podcast...
