I think someone is setting up a "virtual" miner site that lets you mine Scrypt coins that get automatically sold for BTSX. But you cant directly "mine" Bitshares. It was issued in one go by an IPO, and its supply decreases. This means it is deflationary, not inflationary - which is good.

npm install actually installs dependencies in a local node_modules folder if run by user .. not sure about the difference if run by root ...

I see. It's possible I ran some earlier step with sudo when I didn't need to which would screw up the permissions. I seem to be the only one that's had to use sudo for npm install so it's likely unique to my degrading Ubuntu install lol.

turns out: compiling is WAY easier under linux than under windows

Nice! I found I had to use sudo for the npm install though.  Perhaps that's just with my setup.

How safe is it to invest real money into BTSX? I've gone through this topic but haven't found a direct answer to this.

In general this is a difficult question. If most people of those who could ever buy this asset would know an answer to it it wouldn't be a good investment anymore
