With the advent of MaidSafe, as encrypted internet, many of these concerns could disappear.. it'll likely be harder to target DDOS attacks and potentially impossible to down data. They suggest many existing services could just switch their datastore across in ways that to me sounded trivial. Lot of work still to do before it's realised but they are making good progress to a testnet.

masterxchange.com suggests deposits in USD which go via https://tether.to/
Tether looks to be in beta and suggests it allows you to "transact with real-world currency as if it were bitcoin".. masterexchange then has a BTC looking address to receive that USD.. so that's new.

A search in Google throws a lot of pointers to exchanges accepting USD and I expect would do for other similar searches in other currencies.. https://www.google.co.uk/#q=Bitcoin+deposit+USD

General Discussion / Re: Moonstone Fundraiser Help Thread

Ok maybe you can dumb this down for me.  Say I have $100 to invest.  I think bts is going to be 100-500% higher within the next 6 months.  Shouldn't I just invest in bts since that return will be much higher than the 15% moonstone is offering?

If you think BTS is going to be worth 100-500% in a few months, then you would want to accumulate as much MOONFUND as possible (not investment advice, just saying). You can get 15% more BTS in the long run with your 100 USD by buying MOONFUND than by putting your money directly into BTS.

Concretely, if you want to spend 100 USD today on BTS you can get 18,000 BTS,
If you donate to Moonstone you can get 20,700 BTS in the long run.

I would really like to know whether that was simple enough. We'd like to include a simple explanation for our newsletter today. Please let us know what you think!

That's great.. and especially now with the switch to BTS!  +5%  +5%  +5%

...I notice though that the total $ on https://moonstone.io/ hasn't updated.

"The total number and percentage bar are updated on a 15-30 minute basis as we count only verified bitcoin transactions and cloudflare takes about 15 minutes to update on all continents. This is normal and expected." from second post in this thread.

Yes but still not updated.. perhaps it's not including the metaexchange yet or there is a longer delay.

The tokens are send to your newly generated wallet directly.

I wonder most people will already have a BitShares wallet and might then prefer to use that with https://metaexchange.info/markets/MOONFUND/BTC
That just worked well for me and MOONFUND received but I notice though that the total $ on https://moonstone.io/ hasn't updated.

Looks like the content still hasntt updated on all CDNs. Nonetheless the content is almost right.

It means that for every BTC you donate you get the equivalent of 1.15 BTS in the form of MOONFUND tokens. You'll be able to realize your gain over time as we actively buy up MOONFUND. This emans you can get a return of 15% in terms of BTS once the project picks up steam over time. This repayment rate is  made possible through the BitShares delegate system.

So, is that pitching for 5 delegates, that will release value back?.. and what happens to that 5x 100% delegate income after the buyback is complete??

That is where vote, I think, will bring the most value to bitshares.

Really?.. I thought the VOTE idea was more ambitious proof of person that can be used more widely in elections etc.
What I was suggesting I wonder is trivial option to tally votes on a topic by counting the balance on accounts at a timestamp... ah is it not so simple, if the blockchain can't be read for account balances? hmm.. perhaps an option in the forum more used will help encourage engagement but that's less about the stakeholder engagement.

My first close look at this.. good first impression.

Pitched at what looks to be ~1% of BitShares current marketcap, it looks very reasonable for what it's promising.

Could someone put this in plain English?.. sorry if I'm being daft but it is not clear to me if there is a real return expected or if this is a gifted donation:
Quote
Moonstone will have 5 opt-out delegates which can be deselected upon installation, or whenever you choose to. All proceedings from the delegates will be converted to bitUSD, 100% of which will be used to to set 1:1 buy orders for the Bitsapphire UIAs you received upon donation. Upon donation you will receive 1.15 Bitsapphire UIAs, meaning, for every dollar you put in an additional 15% will get back to you in the form of a buyback over the next 5-30 months. As far as we know this is the first crowdfunder with the possibility of a higher return.

Also.. is it just me that has a problem with so many websites not using lite grey on light background?.. perhaps tweak the CSS to a darker font for readability.

Do you speak their language?

That is always a good question.. only a quarter of the people who speak English do so as their first language. It's always good to talk to people in their first language where possible but a quick look back at language data suggests that the languages people frequently speak as not first language are: English; Hindi; Russian; French. So, for example others like Chinese, for the most part is spoken as first language.

Which begs the question.. where is the Hindi forum?.. Perhaps there's a market there??

Also there are simple ways to capture non-English speakers and redirect them to a message specific to them. I have a simple script for doing that in PHP which might be good for that - add an element to the header of the page even, rather than full redirect asking for their help engaging that languages users.

I was at a talk last night by Srdja Popovic, who is an interesting activist and worth looking up. He was talking on how to do non-violent revolutions and one element of that is a clear decision making process.

CounterParty is currently using a simple option to broadcast messages on the blockchain to vote and elect its community director. See: https://blockscan.com/vote/XCPELECTION

I wonder that mixing the vote and burn to wall capabilities of BitShares, with a sum of balances at a given block, would enable a similar option to vote on random topics at will. If the cost of vote is seen to be trivial, perhaps that function would help engage users in voting for delegates too?

There were other aspects to Srdja's talk which related to leveraging change. If you want to change the world, leverage something small and make obvious that change is possible, then acknowledge that mainstream is always more moderate and open up to accommodate that, becoming more moderate overall. Also, pick your battles and know when to take stock and regroup. Success, he suggested, follows from compound of small successes and serious planning. Anyway, back on topic.. voting in BitShares I wonder could become more broad than just for delegates. Allow generic capabilities that others can make use of, rather than something fit for one purpose?

@davidpbrown .. it's a wiki .. please improve it!

I'm not the PR/Marketing for BitShares.. I cannot speak for what the core devs consider the future of BitShares is. Those closer to them need to resolve that and make it clear and the grander narrative can draw on input from me and others but right now I wonder each individual has a perception of what BitShares is. I'm arguing the devil's advocate from the perspective of cryptostocks but perhaps BitShares is becoming all about bitUSD. I wonder that there is value in cryptostocks because it will bolster the potential for future adoption of assets.. it gets people in the door and interested in BitShares for another reason than what could be mistaken as an exotic alt currency.

BitShares needs to define itself. I've suggested in other threads that we need a Mission statement and a Vision statement exactly because I think we need a clearer focus and defined boundary to what BitShares is trying to achieve, in order that we don't waste energy off target.

If ["The primary purpose of the Bitshares X system is the ability to generate bitUSD"], then that is relatively clear but in the case that BitShares wants to be the platform those new business looks to in order to manage their IPO and engage investors, then that needs to be declared more obviously.

That's not a decision I can make.. I've no motivation to put my single perspective into the wiki, just to have it fixed by the next person. We need consensus and that needs to draw on a sense of what opportunity there is for growth. If there is a chance to engage new businesses, perhaps cryptostocks are worth promoting above bitUSD even. I wonder big uptake in bitUSD is something we expect in the future. Right now, new IPOs might help?.. but what potential is there for that??.. what 'DACs' have we seen that are not from the inside of BitShares???

I was invested in MasterCoin at the time they did MaidSafe.. that was their biggest achievement to date, although the Omni wallet is useful, that IPO got huge coverage.. principally because of MaidSafe but perhaps BitShares can get press on the back of companies that launch through BitShares IPO platform?

Regardless, I think the wiki structure and content needs an overhaul by someone who is PR/Marketing.. take a step back and restate what BitShares is and will be in the near future - from the perspective of those who might use it. That then would be a tool that would enable others to promote Bitshares. Fixing the wiki more useful than a trifold leaflet, which I still haven't read.

What?

English.. does BitShares speak it!?..
<rant>

This is the bit of BitShares that I find frustrating.. it doesn't sell itself at all well and yet PR/Marketing dominates the chatter.

Imagine you have a company ready to roll and you want to sell cryptostocks in that. You look at the options and assess them; you look at BitShares and you see.. well let's look at the obvious:

Simple way to speed read is consider only the first sentence in a paragraph..

BitShares/What is BitShares
Quote
BitShares is a technology supported by next generation entrepreneurs, investors, and developers with a common interest in finding free market solutions by leveraging the power of globally decentralized consensus and decision making. ...

Bitcoin is the first fully autonomous system to utilize distributed consensus technology to create a more efficient and reliable global payment network. ...

BitShares looks to extend the innovation of the blockchain to all industries that rely upon the internet to provide their services. ...

BitShares does for business what bitcoin did for money by utilizing distributed consensus technology to create companies that are inherently global, transparent, trustworthy, efficient and most importantly profitable.

BitShares has went through many changes and has done its best to stay on top of blockchain technology. zzzzz

Seems off target from what I'm wanting but I'm thorough so I'll also look at ELI5 since that's there:

GettingStarted/ELI5
Quote
Chapter 1: DEFINITIONS

Can it be possible to pay for your coffee in dollars with your phone but without any intermediary between you and the coffee shop?

We'll get to it but first a few definitions to avoid ambiguity:

"Bitshares X" is a Decentralized Autonomous Company (DAC). Bitshares X being a DAC is not crucial here so if you are not familiar with the concept of DACs then for now you can think of it as a money payment business similar to PayPal or Visa.
....

Chapter 2: PRIMARY PURPOSE

The primary purpose of the Bitshares X system is the ability to generate bitUSD (and other similar assets like bitEUR, bitGold etc).

So how can bitUSD come into existence?
....
...
Chapter 3: STANDARD WAY
zzzz you've lost my attention.

NONE of that is in anyway selling the prospect of my selling a stake in a new company by selling stock.

The talk to an outside will appear as if the activity that is new ventures are internal to BitShares, something that BitShares is doing.. there is no invitation for new startups and no call to investors. That what I think PR/Marketing should be focused on.. the wiki isn't doing it's job if you are expecting that others will have the same opinion as  you that BitShares is ready to do CryptoStocks. Look at the wallet.. it's screaming bitUSD and other assets, it's not a list of [insert English easy read for DAC]/stocks.

Take a close look at the wiki and tell me it's selling the ideal well.. http://wiki.bitshares.org/index.php/Main_Page

Why Choose BitShares
Quote
The inherent problems of Bitcoin and other Cryptocurrencies
...

That is not "Why Choose BitShares: Because you have a company that is inherently valuable and we have a method for you to easily engage investors." To read that into what is suggest, means you either have a vivid imagination or you are already within BitShares and understand its potential but we should not be expecting others to spend their time speculatively because more often than not tools are what they suggest themselves as being not what we will them to be. You can have the perfect product but if you cannot communicate that, then no-one will think to use it. How is this difficult!?
