Marketplace / Re: Buy Keyhotee ID with ProtoShares 10 PTS+
« on: December 24, 2013, 02:30:39 pm »
Does anyone think the 10 PTS price is too high for a found id at current time?

I think the title of this thread is misleading and causing confusion.  It should be, "Donate 10 PTS and receive a Founder ID as a Thank You" or something similar.  At any rate as I've said before those that donated early lost the option to sell if PTS really took off.  By delaying your donation you've kept that sell option open for yourself and 3I hasn't had the funds for dev costs during that time.  Viewed from that perspective the early donors have paid more in opportunity costs than those on the fence about donating now.

On a side note a question for Stan or Bytemaster:

My PTS wallet has a lot of private keys in use due to mining (both solo and pooled) as well as generating addresses for various reasons.  I was thinking of sending my wallet balance to a new wallet so that all PTS are stored in a single pirv/pub key pair.  Is there any advantage/disadvantage to doing this?  Currently I feel my wallet is a bit fragmented but I also don't want to lose the age of the coins/transactions if that matters for anything.

Thanks.

Technical Support / Re: How to backup and restore Protoshares-qt wallet?
« on: December 21, 2013, 04:22:12 pm »
Technically you can dump your private key and write it down somewhere.  However all you really need to do is make sure to 1) encrypt your wallet and 2) make a copy of your wallet.dat file found in %AppData%/protoshares on Windows and ~/.protoshares on Linux.
I have found my .protoshares folder on mac. I have made multiple copies of the wallet.dat file and stored it on cds and flash drives.
If I now cut and past the .protoshares folder on my mac onto a flash drive. Will this effectively remove my wallet from the computer and place it on the flash drive? I don't want to leave any vulnerable data on my computer.

If so, I will just plug my flash drive in every time I want to make a transaction :)

Correct.  The wallet.dat file has all the good stuff in it.  Everything else is generic software that'll be about the same on everyone's computer.  I keep my wallets in tar/zip file on flash memory and just copy whichever one I want to do a transaction with into the right folder, fire up the client, make my transaction, close the client and then delete the wallet.dat file.  You'll want to refresh your wallet.dat file backups every one hundred transactions to make sure it contains a complete and up to date copy of the key pool.

In this case it will import only recieved coins. Mined ones will not be imported =\ So in general question is how to import mined coins

Here's what I did to receive all my coins.  Note that I had a mix of solo and pool mined coins.

1) Start MMC client, encrypt new wallet, let the blockchain sync, record the public address of this new wallet.
2) Exit the MMC client, copy the wallet.dat file to mmc_wallet.dat and copy in your PTS wallet.dat file.  Copy your mmc_wallet.dat somewhere safe too as a backup.  This is now your primary mmc wallet.
3) Start the client (crashed first time but worked the second) and notice you'll have 1/10th of your PTS balance as MMC
4) Send all your MMC balance to your new MMC address recorded in step 1 (account for 0.0002 transaction fee)
5) Exit the MMC client, delete the wallet.dat (this would be your pts wallet) and rename the mmc_wallet.dat back to wallet.dat
6) Restart the MMC client and enjoy all your MMC at a snigle adddress.

BitShares PTS / Re: ProtoShares Top Rich List at block 32000
« on: December 14, 2013, 02:14:33 am »

If you've executed transactions with your wallet that do not use the entire balance this list won't reflect the number of PTS you can spend.  The numbers are accurate per each address listed but not all your coins are at your client's displayed address.  Yes, change addresses are what's up here.  There are some commands you can execute in the console window if the qt client to show all your addresses.

thanks allot!
Outside of forums I am the only person I know who knows what ProtoShares are.
So your help is greatly appreciated  :)

Glad to help coins from being lost forever :)

This is true for ANY coin using a Bitcoin forked wallet: Bitcoins, Litecoins, Feathercoins, Protoshares, Digitalcoins, Primecoins, and I'm sure a number of others.

Is there any information online on how to do this. I see there's a backup function but no restore.  Noob.
However all you really need to do is make sure to 1) encrypt your wallet and 2) make a copy of your wallet.dat file found in %AppData%/protoshares on Windows and ~/.protoshares on Linux.

The wallet.dat file is small and fits easily on usb sticks, SD cards, etc.  Make a few copies of it and keep them in different physical locations (home, work, etc.).

I just want to be 1000% sure before I do this.
So I have encrypted my wallet.
I have made backup .dat files (which I have saved multiple copies of on USB sticks to keep on the shelf).

I am now going to delete all other photoshare related stuff from my computer (like the client etc).

The only thing I am keeping are the .dat files. Which I will use to claim shares in DACs.

Please someone confirm if this is right.

Thanks!

Correct.  I do this all the time since I don't keep my .dat file on my active computers.  If you want to test this just throw a different HD in there or boot off a live CD and download and sync the block chain, exit the client, overwrite the wallet.dat file that's there with your backup of your wallet and restart the client.  You'll see all your coins.

Keep in mind though that your wallet.dat (probably more accurately called a keyring) contains your pool of private/public keys.  It is important to refresh your backups every 100 transactions.  Read up on "Change Addresses" to understand how the client uses a pool of priv/pub keys in your .dat file.

General Discussion / Re: ...from my cold, dead hands!

Option 2 also makes the assumption that the value of a PTS remains static during the unknown period of time it takes for the DAC you invested 1PTS into gains 10x its value.  Perhaps as PTS value stabilizes this won't be such a big factor but currently I feel it's a big part of the "buy back in later" aspect of Option 2.

Is my protoshare public key the address I use to receive protoshares from others?
I just need to know what my public key is so that I can use it to dump my private key.
And eventually use that private key to claim future DAC shares (all correct?)
Thanks

Still struggling with this one guys
Thanks

Remember that your wallet contains several addresses that it doesn't display.  These are change addresses used if you've ever sent less than your entire balance to another address.  When you view your wallet balance it automatically adds up all the addresses in the key pool of that .dat file.

If you decide to go the route of dumping your private key please make sure to read up on change addresses and also the various console commands (like listaddressgroupings) to list all the addresses with balances in the .dat file.  Otherwise when you import your privkey to another wallet you won't see the balance you're expecting.

Another option is to do the following:
1) Create a new wallet.dat file by exiting the client, renaming your existing .dat to something else, and then restarting the client.
2) Note down the public address of this new wallet.dat, encrypt the wallet, dump the privkey and note it down as well.
3) Shutdown the client and copy the wallet.dat to somewhere else safe.
4) Copy your original wallet.dat file back and start the client.
5) Send all your coins to the address you noted down in step 2.

This should leave you with an empty wallet and all your coins stored under a single address and privkey. I plan to do this before the BTS block is poured.

Keyhotee / Re: $300+ for a Keyhotee Founder ID?
« on: December 01, 2013, 08:21:23 pm »
Simply put those that donated earlier can no longer sell the donated 10 PTS for $300 so it has effectively cost them $300 as well or more because the selling option is gone where as those that haven't donated can still opt to or not.

Considering the Founder ID is a reward for a donation I have no problem with most people not being able to buy one before the cast is poured.  As was mentioned earlier by Bytemaster or Stan 99.9% of all ID's will be available from day one so it's not like if you don't donate 10 PTS you're going to be stuck with a name like J0hnBob45.

Folks,

Please Google "change addresses" and understand them before backing up just your private key.

Signed up using your referel link and have the miner running.  Guess I'll have to wait for it to accumulate $10 in charges?  Does it show somewhere you referred me or do you get a notification?

Yeah, wait till you spend $10. You can open a support ticket asking them to confirm which link you used.

Cool.  I just setup 5 2x instances so shouldn't take long now.  I'll pm you a screenshot when it hits $10.  If you don't receive the referral I'll log a ticket otherwise I don't want to pester them.  Btw, I received your 0.001  :).
