General Discussion / Re: Masterplan
« on: June 07, 2014, 06:34:27 pm »
Biggest issue is that the pad obviously isn't going to work if things get even moderately more active. To me it certainly looks like there will be quite a few DACs coming out in close succession, which I think will make the pad unworkable very quickly. Another issue is how to regulate access and who has to continuously edit the information. I expect that it will quickly become the work of a single person who might not be informed enough about the projects he's trying to keep track of. Best thing in my pov would be that the projects manage their own entries.

I'm not that familiar with the available online collaboration tools, so it would be nice if some people have suggestions in that field.  The easiest solution I can think of right now is a shared-calender (similar to the google one) where people/projects can add/edit their own entry, which they also would have to update themselves. At the very least I think it wouldn't hurt to have a central hub with links pointing to the more detailed information or websites of the projects that have announced their plans/intentions on that hub.

Working out how to do collaboration and coordination around a DAC is something that will need to be talked and thought about and it is not a particularly straightforward or easy topic at all. Getting separate people to convene and cooperate in the traditional sense is already not the easiest thing in the world and we're talking anything but traditional in this space. From the top of my head I can think of 3 or 4 areas that might have platforms or solutions that could be of use here and things I'm interested in looking into. I'll list my plans here in the hopes of triggering a conversation or discussion around them, if anyone has any relevant information or links I'd be happy to hear/read from you.
  • Maybe look at successful online communities like multiplayer-game-guilds and see what methods and solutions they use. I have no experience with mmorpgs and online-game communities, but I do know that those communities have large overlaps with the crypto-ecosystem and they also represent big business and sometimes high levels of professionalism
  • Read up what the military has published and worked out in this field. Like it or not, but personally I think way to many people are not realizing the wealth of information and solutions that are available there. Even if you're opposed to the army and its wasting of funds, that should not keep you from getting some value out of it.
  • New concepts in management dealing with flat organizations and often under the name of virtual corporation that deal with outsourcing and cooperating often digitally or geologically separated.
  • Other succesful and professional(as in feeding people working there) open-source projects and see what they are doing and have worked out.

This does not need to be limited to this forum and may even be topics for discussion or interviews on something like the BeyondBitcoin-mumble-sessions or the show. The reason I'm suggesting getting interviews or talking to experts, is because digging through the crap to get to the meat of things or the rare gems of wisdom can be a daunting and laborious task in my experience, made all the more difficult by jargon and fluff that seems to be so loved in "management". Oh and beware of the endless powerpoint-presentations, I think I've developed a nervous twitch whenever I hear the word powerpoint.

Damnit man, I was eating when I saw this and bursting in to laughter while trying not to spill really hurts.

That's one of the best depictions of the pixie dust people seem to believe elaborate scripting to be, like magic it will make everything better. Then again, I've also seen people believing that throwing blockchains or distributed anything at something will magically solve all problems.

That would be more than one million of either one, but since there are only supposed to be 2 million of each, that would mean you successfully executed a 51% attack and probably make your million tokens not worth very much.

Hmm, I needed to do a rescan to see your transactions as well, but I did get them. The spèçiàl çhàrs came out fine.

I was trying to put a " \' " in the memo, but due to my fat fingers and both those keys being next to my enter key, I sent out the transaction by accident before finishing. (Really needs a confirmation question in there before transmitting.) In later tests the client refuses all my messages with " \' " as being to big.

Sorry if it's too little, I was running into a lot of errors trying to figure out how the commands work and lost count of the zeros.

I haven't figured out how the memo thing works, could someone post an example command? Qoute marks don't work and it seems it cuts out after the first space, so are you supposed to use escape-characters for special characters like spaces and such?

EDIT
Also for people not seeing their balance go up, I had to do a blockchain rescan before I saw my new funds.

To send a memo:

Code: [Select]
wallet_transfer 1111 XTS from_account to_account "this is my message"
I don't know if it handles special characters, will send you a message once the recompile is done to test. I did send one earlier with a smiley and that worked :)

Odd I used the exact same format and it got rejected, hmm, maybe I used a single quote in the memo.

EDIT
Oh eventhough I've registered as a delegate I'm not seeing my num connected go up, it's back to 1 now. My log keeps mentioning being connected to 8 peers, but I'm not seeing them in the client software, is that a known issue/feature?

Wackou I tried sending you some with a memo a couple of times, but I think only one actually got accepted by the client.

Thanks svk and yes it was more than enough to register my name and as a delegate, both fees were 10000 for me.

EDIT
It seems my delegate is listening on port 0.0.0.0:35503 is that correct? If not how or where do I change it?

EDIT2
Another thing I noticed is that the log mentions being connect to 8 nodes, but inside the client I only ever see the 1 num connected and single peer. Oh hang on, now I see 2 connected, one being myself.

I also noticed that account-names can only use lowercase letters.

Would someone be so nice to send me some test-funds so I can try registering a name?

Much obliged.

Is delegate registering enabled or not? I've got a vps running, so I thought it might be fun to give running a full node a go.

Odd, I had between 4/5 connections up until block 930 and now I can't connect anymore.
I have compiled the latest git revision, but that does not seem to want to connect either.

What method are people using to update from git and recompiling? Just running make clean doesn't seem to work for me, but deleting all contents by hand and redownloading is not particularly efficient.

General Discussion / Re: Delegated Proof of Stake (DPOS) White Paper

It can't be detected, and the most Amazon/DO/etc would be able to do is shut down the delegate.
.. or steal the privkey ?!

Do you have to use your priv-key on the server itself? Is it not possible to transfer an encrypted wallet via ssh and not enter priv-keys on the hosted server?

Oh hang on, amazon can read the memory as well, so you might need a complex encryption setup that also encrypts data in memory. Haven't looked at ram-encryption so I'm unfamiliar with the possibilities there.

I personally don't use DAC, I call it Virtual Corporations.  Others did apply this term to it, and it still seems to linger but I think at this point the distinctions are fairly clear.  The project is still in it's early stages so we're quickly working these things out.

Seems the primary difference here is that VCorps involve input from people, whereas DACs(in theory) operate automatically.  I still haven't seen any clear examples of how DACs can be used in real-world situations.

Not sure how the Virtual Corporations would have any different legal status than a DAC.  Perhaps you can explain your statement?

-bm
Biggest difference with the announced bitshares DACs (apart from maybe the music one) is that they are completely self-contained. This way the legal issues are circumvented for the moment, because there is no physical connection to the real world. People might be prepared to offer services for or interact with the DAC in trade for stake in or benefit from the use of it, but they are not really employed by or working for the DAC in the usual sense. Doesn't mean that won't happen in the future, but for the near future the DACs aren't physically stepping on toes just yet.

It might very well be that I'm not grasping what your doing with Virtual Corporations, but it sounds a lot like a traditional corporation with employees and management and things like that. I also assume that your corporations are not aimed solely towards products/services entirely inside of the world of the blockchain. If your virtual corporations are not completely virtual and depend on employees, that will most likely lead to legal and government issues. It will in my neck of the woods at least. I wasn't trying to critique your project, but I do think you are taking the monster head on and I don't expect it to just roll over and die. I'm also interested into seeing your solutions and how those might work better or at least are able to compete effectively with traditional centralized corporations.

Personally, and that might just because of my own limitations, I'm not convinced everything works better on the blockchain and I'm a bit worried that a lot of people are engineering spectacular space-pens while not actually looking at practicality and simple solutions first. Might be because of my background and past experiences, that I'm on the skeptical side when looking at things like this. I found that getting people on the same page when they are physically present in the same room can be pretty damn challenging already, but lengthening communication lines added a whole new dimension to that challenge.

If you're also running the titan-branch client then you are running the same setup as I am. Are you running a firewall? I needed to allow access to port 8765 first before getting connections.

Also there is a log in .BitSharesXTS which might give you some more info.

@bluemeanie1: dank je voor de links (saw you answering in Dutch on the nxtforums).

You seem to have a different concept of DAC, because to me it sounds more like a traditional centralized corporation with a lot of the legal and financial administration on a decentralized ledger/administration system. So I'm a bit confused in how this is decentralized and autonomous, because it sounds more like what bitsharesME is hoping to do over here, issuing shares (in centralized corporations/entities) but tracked and issued on a decentralized network.

Your project does seem to be a lot more complex than bitsharesME, when you talk about implementing all these legal systems and contracts in your system.

hi there,

NXT already has the basic bitsharesME functions in place, it's called the Asset Exchange.  There's already quite a bit of activity on it.  What VCorps does specifically is overlays corporate governance onto the assets and allows for shareholders to interact with the management of the company.  For instance shareholders can elect officers, and those officers have control over corporate accounts for the tenure of their office.

-bm

Thanks for clearing that up, it sounds like I understood your concept correctly then. I'm curious with what you'll come up with.

Are you still using the term DAC or have you stepped away from that? Because your are not really talking about a decentralized autonomous company/organisation in your model. Not trying to split hairs here, but it looks like you are going in a completely different direction from the DAC-concepts in bitshares and I'm trying to get my head around what you're trying to do and what benefits and pitfalls a blockchain-based-solution will bring to the table in your application. Biggest pitfall as I see it would be the legal status and validity in the world outside of the blockchain.

You need to delete your old data dir (~/.BitSharesXTS by default). You're trying to sync an old chain.
The new testnet is up.

Oops, missed that, I've got the Titan-client running and connecting now.

I don't know how to register a name yet (did see an insufficient funds failure notice). Any chance of getting some test-funds as well? My receive address is XTS6wRNxsP7So5tx8bqP9GiuQgPpQxRYYiV3Q2QEGokvArquMJF3E
