General Discussion / Re: Decentraliced Dice Game is a awsome idea!
« on: February 01, 2015, 01:38:48 am »
This is a bad idea.  Professional investors and traders want to be able to go to a site like this and manage their accounts.  They will be turned off if they see a tab for candy crush.  IMO, if bitshares is to be a replacement for the nasdaq, then this should be the end result:  to have a professional trading site where end users have complete control over their assets with as much security as possible.  I realize getting this right is tricky and will take time, but distractions such as these games are unnecessary.

I have always thought of crypto projects as a "you build it, they will come" model.  Look how far bitcoin has come with no (or very little) marketing in the beginning stages, and arguably negative marketing with the allegations of ponzi scheme, beanie babies, tulip bulbs, terrorism, child pornography, ect, ect, ect.  Marketing at this stage is largely unecessary.

IMO you guys are panicking because the price is down and you put too much emphasis on your ranking on coinmarketcap.  Bitshares adoption and price is naturally progressing at a nice pace.  Going from essentially 0 to to a market cap of $25 mil in 1.5 years is phenomenal, and the project is nowhere near ready for mainstream yet.  Yes it hit $100 mil and corrected, but that is completely normal for a market and cannot be avoided.  Just look at early charts of Microsoft or Apple.  They had many rallies followed by long, drawn out corrections.  Everyone knows how volatile bitcoin has been over the years.  Markets move in cycles and IMO we are near the bottom of a cycle in crypto right now.  Prices and adoption should begin to rise and along with it more investment and higher pay for delegates.  This technology is too important for you guys to get distracted and not focus on the big picture.  Bitshares has the potential to be a global game-changer.  Don't get frustrated by a down cycle and start thinking that something is wrong or that silly games need to be added to the trading interface.  Perhaps build a separate client for games and gambling or another chain if possible, but keep bitshares as a pristine, trust-minimized value storage and transfer network.  I have personally given my investment in this 2 years to show good progress because I realize Rome wasn't built in a day and it is going to take time to make this happen.  Ignor all the negativity and focus on the task at had.  The global implications of this project are too important.

If you look at the numbers or analyse how Bitcoin gained adoption you'll see the huge role gambling played and continues to play. Up to last year gambling accounted for up to 50% of all Bitcoin transactions too.

Our BitAsset growth is fairly stagnant, by all measurements PLAY will rapidly dwarf BTS if they offer gambling.  Unlike VOTE & BitShares inflating which I tried to talk everyone out of and if anything have a 5% annual fee on unclaimed stakes, in this case there's potentially the option to divest into PLAY at least so it's not the end of the world for me if people don't get this.

General Discussion / Re: The end of POW approaches...

I'm a bit concerned with how quickly Bitcoin has lost all the gains it made from the Coinbase announcement.
This could get messy for BTC if it goes below $200 again and there's no new 'big news' on the horizon.

General Discussion / Re: BitShares Video
« on: February 01, 2015, 12:05:52 am »
This video hasn't got that many hits but it seems to come up in all the searches. It might be country specific, but if you google any of the following search terms 'BitShares' 'BitGold' 'BitUSD' 'BitAssets' and click on videos, this video is in the top 2.

I think it's because I put those words in the title.

If so perhaps some future videos could include some of those words so they get a higher ranking especially BitGold, (to knock BitReserve of the top spot.) It would be good if BitShares came up higher in a general web search somehow for BitGold too.

I can't see it yet.

I was just looking at Alexa.com

http://www.alexa.com/siteinfo/bitshares.org

Apparently BitShares.org is the 6516th most popular site in South Korea and we get 29% of our visitors from there. That can't be right.

Sounds interesting.

Are there any examples & numbers of any other products that have previously been integrated into a Bitcoin branded wallet and enjoyed success as a result?

What if a % of the funds used to "gamble" using this were actually "burned"?

Lol instead of " house always wins"...the shareholders would be the true winners. Sounds like a great idea to me.

That's a fanastic idea!!! I like it!!!  +5% +5% +5% +5%

* Put it in the blockchain
* Allow the games section to toggle on and off
* Toggle it off by default

Or, just release a different wallet that accesses that part of the blockchain

I like that solution as well.  As long as it put in the blockchain, I'm happy.

Yip, on the blockchain with the blockchain as the house would be amazing. The edge can be insignificant if it's doing the job of driving BitAsset growth, then at a later stage once BitAssets are established the house edge can be increased & generate significant profit.

This article from March 2014 says gamblers wagered over
$2 Billion on Just-Dice.com in less than 9 months.

By most accounts, gambling represents between 50 and 60 percent of all Bitcoin transactions.
So it's hard to imagine BTS growing market share without being competitive in the gambling market.

Yes, it is a good point.

Watch out, Powerball! BitShares has another multi-billion dollar industry in its sights.

The picture is quite accurate. I had a quick look, 80%+ of bingo players are woman,  while 90%+ BTS users are male.
So it's a complete mismatch. At this stage we should pursue other types of gambling instead if at all possible.

We should give existing male users recreational gaming and gambling options if we want to grow BitAssets as well as challenge for some of the Bitcoin market share.

Unless you are looking for a way to get a new demographic involved...  :)

I knew that would be the comeback :)
I haven't seen any evidence of new demographics in any alt-coins. This is the same thinking around the 'marketing push' that somehow BitShares would leapfrog into mainstream demographics and scoop up Bitcoiners in the process.  I'm a numbers and facts guy, I know what the demographics for crypto-currency are, I know what worked for Bitcoin and think plays a large role in LTC and DGC volumes and I really love the numbers I'm seeing from dice and casino games.

There have probably been over a 1000 sites that have offered BitCoin gambling options up to now yet very few if any successful bingo options. Bitcoin free market entrepreneurs would have pursued that more if any numbers backed it up.

Edit: I don't mind the idea of proceeds going to charity or even if there are little/no proceeds if it helps promote BitAsset use, I'm just specifically not a big fan of bingo as it doesn't appeal to males. I guess there are legal implications with regard to other options, I still haven't had a chance to listen to the mumble yet.

If you could do a seamless bingo front end website, you might attract that demographic, however I don't know how you'd get round the issue of BitAssets (that market wouldn't be keen.) Our users will play it, if it's the only option they have, so it's better than nothing but is my least favoured option.

There's a great opportunity here to get our existing 90%+ male BTS holders to drive BitAsset growth and even take Bitcoin market share, but the games should replicate & improve upon what's already producing results & has been shown to work unless there is compelling evidence/figures to back up another strategy.

General Discussion / Re: ShapeShift useful for bitUSD?

This is quit impressive.
BTS volume on bter went from a 60ish btc a day, to 180 now.

I think that was due to the more than 1.5 million share dump that happened, not to shapeshift.  (Unless someone used shapeshift to dump).

The price was at 4700 and there was some of the biggest buywalls under the price that I've ever seen on bter (two 500k+ walls).  And there was practically no shares for sale at all, and then some guy decided to set fire to it all by dumping it straight down to 4200.

I cant wait until the people who were upset by the november changes have finished selling all their BTS.

If they were big AGS holders they still have a lot of selling to do thanks to the November changes.

Having said that all the merger shares that were made available with 0.5 didn't have as big of a price negative effect as I expected so that's promising.

+5% Very good and interesting blog

Helps a lot that you point out your long relationship with and admiration with the project before going into critique. Also helps that you point out (lament) some of the same problems affecting your own project. Finally, that you expect and hope that they do well based on their talents, and that they should visit here to correct any wrongs. Very happy about all of this  :D

I like this idea. Forum reports would be fine as well, we just need more transparency from our delegates across the board.

+5% The community is clearly asking repeatedly  for frequent updates and transparency yet few delegates are currently providing them.

Maybe someone should make a template. One where they show the dollar equivalent earned say 'Jan 1st to Feb 1st' and then a breakdown of salary, expenses and future projects etc.
