Instead of "We at Bitshares believe in challenging the status quo and building technology that makes life simpler for all."

What about something along the lines of:

"BitShares [is a tool that] enables those that believe in building technology that makes life simpler for all by [facilitating a non-violent and voluntary, contract free digital economy] and challenging the status quo."

That way, the statement doesn't speak for everyone by saying "We at BitShares" but instead speaks to a specific group:

"Those that believe" X

Good interview, I agree with CH that meetups are where the fun is at.

I think all the statements are pretty close together in that they say similar things that most people would agree with on all three.

I see A and C options as politically charged statements that cater to or romanticize certain idealism in association to BitShare on a far from center pendulum swing. They pigeon hole the why of BitShares to a certain segment. Where B is a more generally inclusive and balanced statement.

Solid analysis, I think you're right in that B is more general and inclusive, and A + C (increased autonomy of persons, increased respect of personal freedoms) could be argued to be a subset of "making life better".

It's easy to attack a politically charged statement, but it could also have more emotional impact. At the end of the day, we want to make BitShares something that seems so intuitive and natural that people ask themselves "Why aren't I paying attention to this / supporting this / using this?" As Simon said in the TED talk, people didn't go to Martin Luther King's civil resistance rally for him, they did it for themselves.

You are probably correct that we shouldn't seek to exclude a demographic by making statements that lean too far from the center.

Technical Support / Re: I Want to Add a Trollbox to the Web Wallet
« on: March 22, 2015, 01:12:45 pm »
We already have an IRC channel @ freenode (#bitshares) with some 15 people in it ..
Can we use freenode with irccloud.com? I could register #bitshares-trollbox and put a bot there if desired

Yep, freenode channels can be used with irccloud.com.

The only downside is that in order to participate, you would need to register an account with irccloud.com. So I guess it would come down to whether or not we want to add reliance on their 3rd party service to the client. On the plus side, I think IRC cloud is one of the more light weight ways we've found to achieve this.

We talked about adding the IRCCloud register form to the IRC chat embedded into the client, and display it on the sidebar that the IRC channel output would display to, only if the user doesn't have a username already configured, i.e. the first time you use it. Otherwise your username and password could be saved in localstorage or some client side configurations, and the BitShares IRC accessible seamlessly.

Out of the ones you listed, I like C the most. I think that strengthening human rights and enabling freedom will resonate with future users, and addresses a problem that many are aware of in the world (eroding freedoms).

Glad you are thinking about the "Why" of BitShares existence.

"People don't buy what you do, they buy why you do it."

Hey gamey if you haven't already, please hook up with robrigo so he can get you into the slack and mumbles.
I think he's settin something up for this weekend so we can coord this.
Thanx :)

To clarify what Ken said: I have made a separate slack team to organize this effort so I can invite local Detroiters that I meet without bringing a bunch of unknown users into the NullStreet slack. Anyone who wants to join is welcome.

Even better...also coordinated with the board of directors-delegates-PR team and make another slack for it in Denver and San Diego! This should fix the wiki, the marketing, the bts price and all...

Haha tonyk. I understand your cynicism. I don't think this is a silver bullet by any means.

Also arhag:  You have a ton of potentially useful proposals scattered all about the forum. What would you think about organizing them on some central repo with descriptions and author attribution? I think it would be a good idea to keep these gems from getting buried in the forum.

I'm attempting to tap into the local maker and entrepreneur community to find a team that I can work on this with. What I'd like to do with Bitshares Institute is distill an explanation of what bitshares is that can be tailored to different early adopter demographics... and eventually everybody. I haven't claimed this will fix the wiki, marketing, or price... but all we can do is inspire others to join the cause, make a solid attempt to add some value to the ecosystem, and find more users that derive some value from the network. In particular I think it would be really cool to find a way to enable artists outside of the music industry with UIAs somehow... like painters, sculptors, and other content producers. I can tap into these demographics locally with the right model and create materials that can be replicated in other metro cities.

If you think you could use a Slack style software to organize a group of people than by all means go for it. It's a great way to aggregate information about different topics and collaborate. All I'm trying to do with the Bitshares Institute slack is communicate with a team I'm starting to further the development of educational materials, documentation, and the like. I don't think we need a separate slack for each geographic area unless there are similar initiatives... which is also why I am inviting anybody that wants to join and add their thoughts. I understand a lot of this already happens in Nullstreet which is also great, but by making a separate team I can add anyone I locally that I want to collaborate with.

I agree that we should refactor the bitshares wiki and overall documentation into a gitbook format!

What if I told you I've been strategizing a Bitshares project to serve a purpose very similar to that described by  Ethereum Builders? https://blog.ethereum.org/2015/03/20/ethereum-builders-experiment/

@gamey I think he means something anyone can easily send a contribution to via gitbooks, like http://ethereumbuilders.gitbooks.io/guide/content/design_rationale.html

Bitshares Institute will include peer to peer community driven learning in a cMOOC format on p2pu.org, to contribute to the set of learning materials and beginner documentation and foster a strong open source community of collaborators and create materials to help on board new comers to the bitshares ecosystem.

Anyone who wants to be involved with "The Redocumenting" please PM me.  8) I've been getting heads together in Detroit to work on this but would love to expand Bitshares Institute to other locales and it sounds like you would be a great contributor to the effort Ken!

Bitshares Institute is currently working on:
-finishing the Wikipedia.org initial draft
-Syllabus
-Glossary of terms
-Launching website MVP
-Delegate proposal

Other ideas
-Organize community proposals in one place until it can happen on the blockchain
-Evolve the technical documentation of the codebase where we can.
-Support the p2pU course with video material explaining for concepts and practical use cases.
-Work on materials other embassies can use to educate their local communities about Bitshares.

I've been trying to keep this under wraps but as you can tell the bitshares community is in dire need of more educational materials, updated documentation and filling in the gaps, tutorials (video or otherwise). There has been some great work in this area by Max, Riverhead, Xeroc, Cass, and many others. The goal of bitshares institute is to expand on that and help fill in gaps of understanding / reduce the barrier to entry, cognitively and practically!

edit: here's an outline of the topics I wanted to cover at the last meetup- it starts to describe the role I see a Bitshares embassy like Bitshares Institute taking. https://docs.google.com/document/d/1OZMwEbDLn5WaxISweAXgdtlJoARhyXgFFS4Z0cI5Tb4/edit

uuugh..

How do we at least get numbers 8 and 9 from my list accomplished?

You raise valid points. We need to reduce the barrier to understanding and clean up the information base.

Here's a detailed DNS related delegate proposal for building interop with the traditional system for #8... I don't think the delegates have been registered yet though.

Question,

If you release notes on the bts chain, then after the snapshot to the new chain what happens to old notes on the bts chain?
Let's see what will be possible with the new UIA engine .... afaik it will be possible for the issuer to prohibit any market transactions
Yup some of the new permissions:
halt markets
Halt balance transfers
Retract balance
Restrict deposit (white list)

Just a heads up- seeing a web server landing page when I try to visit your main website. DNS problem?
I'm sorry about this, there has to be a DNS problem outside my home country and it's hard for me to fix it as I'm no expert in this area. Everything works fine in my browser but you are not the first one to report problems accessing our URLs.
I wonder if using a free service like cloudflare.com for DNS would help... you point your DNS records to them and they provide some services like cdn,  free ssl, etc.

hey for those who don't able to access neura.sx - here some screens

Thanks cass,  their site looks polished and the other projects sound interesting.  Hope you can figure out the DNS problem @jakub!

Thank you for your positive feedback so far. I'm really pleased that you like it.

I wonder what is the best way to offer the GUI for testing so you can see it in action.
Are you willing to set up a virtual machine on your computer and run the compiled jar there? (using virtual machine is for security reasons)
Or would you suggest other options?

Also, is there a test blockchain we could use? (so far all my test have been done in live environment using a test wallet with a small amount of bts but I do realize we need a testing process better than this)
You could use DevShares, a separate network for testing. PM me if you need some test DVS with a public address or registered account.
