General Discussion / Re: BitShares 0.9.0-RC1 Feedback

Right after the replay, BitShares encountered an exception. I relaunched it and got another:

Now I launched it for the third time, no problems logging in! A fleeting bug of some sort. On to more testing...

I had a similar experience. Crashed 3-4 times then made it through the replay to the login screen.

On the login screen, unlocking the wallet causes the program to hang at the loader. Wiping the app data and resetting the chain ended in a crashing scenario like above which eventually resolves but then the hanging issue happens.

OS X isn't stable but it sounds like this release is more stable for Windows users. That's a good sign at least.

edit: let it hang logging for about 10 minutes and it eventually authed me.

Looking good fellas!   +5%

besides my vote, let me know how I can be of help!

 +5% to that and voted.

Thanks for the kind words everyone. This interview represents the culmination of what we have learned both participating on the forums here and traveling on the peer to peer road trip. JB really worked some magic to make it all sound so well from a recording on his iPhone.

I'm sorry we couldn't meet each other Thom. I had to fly out from Fuzzy's back home to prepare for taxes and get back to work. I would have really liked to join the guys on the last leg of the journey to St. Louis... maybe next time!

Looking forward to learning your perspective from the final cut Bitscape Media produces.

General Discussion / Re: A Toast to Toast
« on: April 21, 2015, 01:09:22 am »
Basically, a new DAC is launching to focus on entertainment startups that want to leverage the functionality of BitShares. This DAC won't have market pegged assets and will function autonomously from BitShares. Multi-currency wallets such as moonstone will act as the bridge between multiple chains, so one can still trade between artistcoins issued on the Entertainment DAC and bitUSD issued on BitShares.

Citation needed.

not sure on the minute mark...

Thanks. I listened to this hangout before and don't remember the bolded conclusions above. I will listen to it again.

Although, I would appreciate it if bitsapphire could just confirm whether it is true or not and save me time.

Edit: I only skimmed through it (it would be so nice if there were transcripts), but I am pretty sure those claims were not made in that hangout.

You can find that information here: http://whatarenotes.info/

Under "NOTES VALUE":

Quote
One of the differences between the current BitShares blockchain and the upcoming BitShares Music blockchain is that the BitAsset market engine will be removed. BitShares Music will serve as a distributed, on blockchain, market for all UIAs. This includes both artist tokens and USD pegged IOUs created and issued out by gateways that protect all users and artists from volatility.

Gateways provide the on and off ramp to/from fiat_USD to crypto_USD.

Those that fear counterparty risk from the gateways (you must trust the gateways to redeem the IOU_USD for a real USD) can move their funds into BitAssets, like BitUSD, BitCNY or even BitGOLD, on the BitShares blockchain since BitAssets are free from counterparty risk.

Under "UPCOMING WALLET":

Quote
Moonstone.io will be integrated seamlessly within PeerTracks from day one. Moonstone allows for low trust crypto-to-crypto exchange between multiple different blockchains. This will provide much needed initial liquidity for BitShares Music. Initial crypto pairs available on Moonstone include:

    Bitcoin
BitShares (Including all UIA and BitAssets like BitUSD and BitCNY)
BitShares Music (including all artist tokens and gateway IOUs)
    BitShares Play

Moonstone provides a simple exchange interface for both markets within the corresponding blockchains and in between blockchains.

Hope that helps.

The reason it is being launched separate dates back to the idea of multiple DACs using the BitShares toolkit- some of the projects started were merged into BitShares (VOTE and DNS for instance) while others (Play and Music) are still working on their own version of the code.

General Discussion / Re: BitShares?bitshares ? bitShares ?
« on: April 15, 2015, 02:57:35 am »
I like "bitshares" , and it makes more sense due our bitshares logo that is a "b" ...  (and not a "B")

Sent from my ALCATEL ONE TOUCH 997D

yup. capitalization is so 20th century.  +5%

Agreed. IMO we should have "Bitshares" to refer to the DAC and "bitshares" to the shares themselves. I suppose it is too late for that? Camelcase for written words (as opposed to variables in a program) is just weird to me.

Also while we are on this topic, anyone opposed to declaring a bitshares symbol?

Latin lower case b with stroke for BTS currency symbol: ƀ

Append to market pegged asset: ƀUSD, ƀGOLD, etc.

Technical Support / Re: Multiple wallets supported?
« on: April 13, 2015, 07:57:26 am »
Hey Karnal,

You can include the argument flag:

 --data-dir /new/app/data/path

when starting the client on the CLI to change the application data directory that your wallet is pointed at.

On another note, I think you will be able to use the Recovery Key brainwallet mechanism in the web wallet to use the same wallet at different physical locations soon (so long as you have your brain key memorized).

Eventually the recovery key will be standardized to be usable across all clients AFAIK. Looking forward to moving my funds into a brain wallet specifically that can be used on the fly from both desktop and web wallets.

This thread is a rabbit hole of whitepapers. Awesome!!

Read this report on a flight today. The report dicusses different ways to classify projects using blockchain ledgers in centralized and decentralized manners. BitShares was mentioned once (in reference to Pactum). Use cases in the financial system are described as well. Good job Tim.

We're the guys behind Pactum btw.

The report says it is tokenless but also uses DPOS. Can you talk about what mechanism you use to vote for delegates in a tokenless DPOS?

This includes hours of off-camera interviews where Bytemaster has given them insights about what is coming later this year.  They are not allowed to disclose that information, of course, but they are free to tell you their general impressions and personal levels of interest in what is going on at Bytemaster Labs.
:-\

I'd love to hear/see/read about their impressions

+5% any shareholder, in any company, in this situation, would always want an insight.

Visiting the BitShares guys in Blacksburg was a real treat. When we first arrived into town, we drove the BTS mobile over to the office in a business complex owned by Virginia Tech. Stan greeted us outside the building and we followed into an office building that seemed to serve a start-up incubator, with many companies represented. We entered the BitShares HQ into a space with a small conference setup. Nathan, Valantine, Vikram, and Ben had their desks positioned in each corner around four tables arranged as a round table. The Follow  my Vote crew and Dan each have a small office off this space. The team consolidated into this room in a move of frugality to reduce costs incurred from using the offices accessible from the main space. A discussion around the tables followed, where we proceded to learn a little about the internal project road map and float ideas out in a free flowing brainstorm session. At some point Dan went into some details regarding efficiency improvements to the code that they have been experimenting with, some of the problems with multi sig, and other interesting topics. The devs wove snippets into the conversation as they worked intently from their desks. Sometime around 1 PM Stan came in with a boatload of pizzas and we all happily proceeded to devour it.

Stan put us up in a nearby hotel for next 7 days, and we proceeded to come to the office each day to work alongside the team; the Bitscape guys cycled through interviewing devs at their availability. I made some more in roads on the wikipedia page and got some feedback from Nathan. We many of the evenings meeting up with various members from the team for dinner, beer, or just to hang out and have some tea. Some events from the week were going to a BitShares meetup at NuSpark, and visiting the town of Floyd in search of a local spring and finding a local shop owner with Floydian scrip, a local currency. She seemed quite interested in BitShares!

We also partook in a tasty BBQ out on the Larimer compound. Pam makes a delicious potato salad. We enjoyed some more "talking shop" as Stan phrased it, soaking up some sunlight and knowledge.

The experience has impressed upon me that these guys have been working tirelessly to continue the pursuit of innovations that will make BitShares highly scalable, predictable, quick, and competitive.

The entire crypto space is fledgling. That includes Bitcoin. I suggest that those worried about  immediate results take a longer term view. A lot of dev work isn't being done in public repos, and the reason why the team isn't tempting the community with "big things" is precisely because they don't want to hype anything until it is finished.

These guys are trying to learn from the past by keeping the hype to a minimum until there is substance to back it. I'd rather have that than over promising and under delivering any day.

We won't see sustained growth until there is a sustainable market for bitshares technology. We likely won't see that until there is a stable release.

Cryptocurrency prices are all speculation. Invest in people. That's my $0.02 bitusd.
