General Discussion / Re: In preparations for the "big" announcement

Not necessarily, as a dumb example if a ui button is tied to a sleep(10) call in the core and excluding multithreading to keep this simple, the ui will feel slow and the problem would be in the core.

I have not analyzed the code so I don't care to speculate on why it's slow, but it IS.

Kencode is an extremely valuable member of this community.  His place is here with us, the same as everyone else.

Yes. Now toke the peace pipe people. While you still have a choice .. :D

933
Ken, opinions are as varied as people. No need to belittle those who have a different opinion.

IMO forcing delegates to present activity reports is a bit like assuming they are up to no good by default. Why then mistrust by default?

You are not going to fix this presumed voter apathy issue by making reports mandatory, if shareholders are (allegedly) apathethic, then what is a report going to change? Apathethic people don't read reports ;D

It seems to follow, like I said, that if this is something that we as shareholders truly need, then naturally the delegates who don't comply will get voted out, outcompeted.

To presume the issue is with 'apathethic shareholders' is to doom the whole enterprise, for if that is the reality then we have bigger issues than monthly reports.

If accountability didn't evolve when BitShares was a tiny company, do you really think it will evolve if BitShares gets bigger?
Yes .. it will .. because shareholders will vote for that

To me and possibly many of you, one of the great possibilities of BTS is beginning to bypass the legacy banking system as often as possible.

In this, we are in agreement with cryptocur users, whatever their choice of coin may be.

We are also no strangers to the perils of leaving cash at exchanges, and with the string of more or less regular "thefts" from exchanges, a decent pie of crypto users are wary to leave their money at the exchange - and rightly so.

It seems to me that BTS is the perfect complement for a modern cryptocur user. We don't always want to be exposed to the volatility of the prices. Moving back and forth between the banking system and the exchange is silly, and leaving money at the exchange is not prudent.

This is one of the areas where BitAssets can really shine.

It is my belief that one of the big impediments for (e.g) a bitcoin user to use (e.g) dash is simply tribal loyalty. He seems himself as a bitcoiner, and wants to stay away from those other guys. In my opinion this has prevented many a crypto enthusiast from making better investment decisions, but this is not my point.

BitShares does not compete with the other coins in the same way. We are complementary, not adversarial.
If bitcoin is falling, then why not store your wealth in BitUSD (or BitSilver, or..) for the time being?

I know I have, and it's saved me more than 1K.

Presently I do not think the users of these coins know that there is an alternative.
If that assessment is correct, I propose that we begin identifying the most direct/impactful ways to spread the word about this - in forums, bitcoin/altcoin centric websites, reddit, and so on.

Altough we ought to wait until some of the issues with the client are fixed, or it will leave a bad impression.
That is no impediment to start planning the strategy now.

Thoughts?

I did not vote because the options presented are too limited, but here is my opinion.

Reports ought to be optional. Whether said reports belong in the blockchain or not I don't know, but leaning towards no.

If it is accountability that the majority of shareholders want, then wouldn't delegates or workers or whatever the term of the week is end up having to (non coercively) submit the reports anyway, under the possibility of not being voted for?

Given that consideration, personally I do not see the need to enforce such a rule.

937
I'm not sure if dividing the community like this is such a good idea.

Chill people.

I compiled and then stripped the (300MB) binary.

My biggest technical concern is how buggy the client still seems to be. As I pointed out in the 0.9.0 feedback thread, moving my wallet to a new system was a two day odyssey where the blockchain stopped syncing several times and unlocking the wallet would not work.

Someone in another thread suggested running the bitshares console client to sync, because apparently this yields better results.
Of course, that is unacceptable. Imagine that being a new users' first experience.. doesn't exactly inspire confidence!

Another thing is that the wallet is very heavy. On a quad core with 2GB of RAM (virtual machine - 2GB RAM *just* for BitShares GUI), the UI lags. Clicking on 'exchange' takes about two seconds to register, for instance. The program feels very heavy. I don't think it's actually doing so much (especially on a system with such generous specs) to warrant being so slow.

Non technical concerns include misleading/incomplete/outdated documentation. We need someone who's willing to step up and correct the technical errors in the documentation. After that there should be some spellchecking, for there are many such errors in the wiki as well.

This is especially true with all the new proposed rules. I don't even understand anymore if BitAssets will still return interest, for many people of course that's one of the benefits..

And lastly, there seems to not be too much interest in privacy features; Namely, there is still no proxy support as we approach 1.0, and to my knowledge the official faucet is still registering accounts without TITAN. Which means most users' finances are now on the internet for the whole world to see. And I don't think they realize that.

That's all I can think of right now. Even with all these things I still see great potential in this, and it works so well together with other cryptocurrencies as well. When people realize they can safely hold value in BitUSD (as far as $ stability goes, of course) while they want to be sure their BTC or WhateverCoin won't be dropping in value .. BitShares really is a game changer I think, in more than this aspect.

But as it stands now, I cannot recommend it to people I know. The wallet is so slow (and yeah I know, online wallet, but then you're trusting your money to a 3rd party, no?) and buggy it would be an instant turn-off.

Migrating my wallet to a new computer.

Begun two days ago.

6 hangs at seemingly random blocks, cpu fan banging loudly and no apparent progress.
4 times input password and the dots animation keeps on going for 10 mins, at which point I manually kill the process.

Only 14 days left to sync now, and the balance is horribly wrong.

This is Debian 8/x86_64.

Just.... >:(

Meh, a return flight at such short notice is ~300€ now. Way too much for such a short flight, I'll have to skip. Thanks for the offer, definitely another time :)

Hmm, maybe I'll get on a plane and attend!
