General Discussion / BitShares February Newsletter
« on: February 09, 2015, 11:51:51 am »
Shareholders and Delegates,

Our new BitShares community newsletter “The NullStreet Journal” has published it's first issue! I want to thank everyone who submitted their delegate updates and progress reports, and everyone else who took the time to contribute. This was truly a group effort!

Please visit https://bitshares.org/newsletter/2015/nullstreet/the_nullstreet_journal_0-1.pdf
and check out all the latest BitShares news.

Cass and I are working out the details to streamline a process for delegates and community members to contribute to future issues. Once we have everything in place, I will post an update with directions and information about how to get involved. Meanwhile, please enjoy the first issue, and let us know what you think!

Thanks,
Michael

Technical Support / Re: Restoring wallet backup throws assert exception
« on: February 09, 2015, 01:59:32 am »
I had a similar issue when trying to restore a wallet from a json in the 6.0 gui:

Failed to restore wallet backup. Your original wallet has been restored. Error: invalid password (20001) Invalid Password!

The password I used was correct, I have never changed it.....

Are there instructions somewhere for restoring a wallet from a json backup using the console?

Thanks mira!

General Discussion / Re: Economics of subsidized mining pool
« on: February 05, 2015, 10:40:21 pm »
This is a really clever use of marketing funds because it'll kickstart the popularity of the pool and people will likely stay with bitUSD once they've tried it.

I agree that this could be the greatest benefit. A very worthy one.

General Discussion / Re: Cannot wait for NOTE on Bitshares network!

Awesome! I heard that they might be doing this....

So how will it work? I thought they were going to be their own DPOS chain.... will they just snapshot the UIA at some future date and then launch? Is there a possibility that they will just decide to use the BitShares chain forever (will BTS UIA allow them to do everything they want to do)?

I guess my questions are rhetorical unless cob happens to see this post  :)

Edit: Nevermind, I just read cob's latest update:

I think that delegate hangouts are an awesome idea, but I don't think you necessarily have to label them "marketing" or whatever else. Just let people sign up if they want to spend a few minutes talking to their "constituents".

Delegate positions will soon be much more competitive, so if you give them a free opportunity to advertise/campaign/answer questions, I think you will have them lining up around the block - no pun intended!

I thought this was an excellent idea, and I believe the risk/reward ratio is highly in our favor. Bytemaster said that by the end of the year, anyone will be able to do this with smart contracts anyways, so the concerns about potential "regulatory crackdown" for gambling are a moot point. To turn down the opportunity to create some desperately needed utility for bitAssets at this point would be foolish.

As for user adoption, think about how many people play "bingo" instant lottery tickets. Hundreds of thousands? Millions? Imagine if they found out that they could play them online, using real money, to win real money. A lightweight wallet that you could fund and then play? And completely decentralized, so people from every country in the world would be driving the jackpots higher and higher. The upside potential is huge, considering the 80 hours it would take to implement. (bytemaster's estimate).

Without a major fiat portal to support the price of BTS , do you really think BTA can be used by millions of users ?
Until the fully decentralized trading status achieved (tens of thousands of gateways around the world) , we shouldn't be gambling with the only fiat portal at hand , period .

BTA relies on BTS .

This is true. After seeing many other post from Chinese members, I am now convinced that perhaps it would not be a good idea to add anything that has to do with gambling. At least until there is a much more robust gateway system in China.

Does anybody know exactly how many BTS we get for each AGS?

I know this doesn't apply to BTC38, but still curious
