I really hope a good news is coming, because on the bad news side... : http://www.coindesk.com/research-hackers-install-backdoor-bitcoin-cold-storage/

Can someone evaluate the significance of this ? That doesn't smell good...
FUD news ... old issue ..

from #bitcoin

Quote
12:49:11 |  op_mul> coindesk is pushing more nonsense about ECDSA flaws
12:49:30 |  op_mul> "Each time a bitcoin transaction is signed, the signature is generated partly from a random number known as 'k'. The compromised ECDSA uses a specific formula to select 'k' .."
12:49:35 |  op_mul> no fucking shit.
12:50:26 |  Anduck> so.. nothing new there?
12:50:36 |  op_mul> nothing new at all.
12:50:40 |  Anduck> also can't you do the k-pickin in a deterministic way?
12:51:19 |  op_mul> you can, but with bitcoin's ECDSA you can't prove it was picked deterministically without the private key.
12:51:53 |  Anduck> so re-using 'k' is impossible if done right
12:52:06 |  op_mul> improbable.
12:52:36 |  op_mul> there's ~2^128 possible nonces. if you've made the same one twice you've got bigger problems than signatures.
12:53:21 |  op_mul> ie, you used the same RNG to make the private key in the first place.
12:55:15 |  wumpus> an ecdsa *implementation* flaw
12:56:18 |  op_mul> wumpus: point was it's being presented as some new wild attack.
12:56:26 |  wumpus> but yes, old well-known problem
12:56:38 |  wumpus> recycling old problems is very much like FUD
12:56:48 |  op_mul> I'm aware of at least one claimed attack where it has actually been used, though I wasn't able to confirm it.
12:57:48 |  wumpus> broken wallet impementations that reused nonces, sure, I don't know of any cases where it was done intentionally

Thanks xeroc, I'm glad to hear that

General Discussion / Re: I suggest stop price feed and stop market engine

If a delegate stop publishing feed prices for stopping his own losses, the necessary response of the blockchain has to be to kick him out. This conflict of interest is quite frightening for the stability of the whole system...

Pro earthing, anti vax... sigh. Some particular vaccines may be useless/dangerous, but vaccines as a technology is what made humans reach the lifespan we have today.

Science is not a conspiracy. This is the scientific method : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EYPapE-3FRw, you don't need much more epistemology than that.

My own reading advices would be Ben Goldacre, an epidemiologist and psychiatrist, author of books "Bad Science" and "Bad Pharma". This poor fellow is an unsung hero, fighting on 2 fronts, against anti-science propaganda on the one hand, and against the ignoble practices of big pharma on the other hand.

I enjoyed reading the list! It's also great for building trust because it is personal.
Putting an anti-scientific book about earthing up there is maybe not the strongest indicator of a solid ("scientific") project.
I don't have any clue about earthing! It may work. My point is just that someone that does a 5 minutes research (like I did) or just looks at the title of the book will get the impression that earthing is a product people are sold by pseudo science.
So all I am saying is that it doesn't serve the purpose of giving the reader of your blog confidence in that BitShares works (meets "scientific" standards). Many people won't understand exactly how Bitshares works so they form an opinion based on little indicators like this and/or trust people who tell them that it is safe to store you money with it or not.

Indeed, earthing has all the indicators of a pseudoscience, and I must say I'm disappointed this thing appeared on your reading list. Falling for scams doesn't inspire trust, and independently of whether earthing is a scam or not, it is definitively perceived as a scam by many.

The article before the last on btcgeek mentioned BitShares/BitGold as a way to buy Gold, and was more positive : http://btcgeek.com/how-to-buy-gold-with-bitcoin/

It's sad we lost a "supporter" and got a FUD spreader instead.

DigitalVortex, qu'est ce que tu penses qu'il serait le plus urgent d'expliquer en français ? Pour aller plus loin, il faut plonger dans le code, pas évident pour un non développeur...

I'm the author. Thanks for adding it here  :).

The site is fairly new, and has few viewers at the moment, and is aimed at Bitcoin enthusiasts.

I first followed the structure of BM's Vegas speech, starting by the Bitcoin vision, and how mining is not fulfilling this vision, then I presented the DAC point of view of Bitcoin. After that I described DPOS, asset creation, and how the market peg works (technical, and probably not cristal clear, hope there is no error). Then I spoke of the history of BitShares (PTS, AGS, the merger), and a little bit about the future (other DACs, + VOTE and DNS functionalities), and finally relevant links on where to start.

The head picture is a custom mix of 2 pictures from Brian's first BitShares video. I hope this doesn't break a copyright or something.

I am going to let them know they have to manage their own PR as well.

Brian will be here this week so I will pressure him.

We can always bring him on for hangouts.  I think it would be an hour of his time well worth it.  When people don't see someone around at all, they tend to assume the worst.  A little community interaction, I believe, will go a LONG way :)

The hangout he made (er... a long time ago...) was mouth watering. What was planned seemed huge (even though I don't remember well), and I think it's wise to wait for a 1.0 wallet before starting. But Brian really should have been much more present here... Please, by all means, make that hangout happen !

We have a new target now : we could upgrade sparkle once it's up ! It would give us some battlefield experience, and show the world that DPOS has anti-cancerous defensive measures :D

Anything that honors AGS/PTS/BTS will always have my support and I will never dump.
Anyhting that honors DOGE,BTC etc no matter how promising it is ...no support sorry..
 +5% to sparkles

That's cult mentality. If someone respects the social consensus, no need of critical thinking anymore ? Even if it's someone that never delivers anything, full support accorded ?

I hold BitShares because it's the best product out there, and because I believe that mining is absurd. And BitShares is slowly abandoning the argument "mining is absurd" because now it offends sparklers. That's a big shot in our foot.
