Technical Support / Cant compile on latest Ubuntu
« on: October 13, 2015, 07:59:56 am »
Version of Boost in 15.04 is 1.55, so that means bitshares-2 is not even compilable on the latest version of Ubuntu >:(

Detected version of Boost is too old.  Requested version was 1.57 (or
  newer).

I guess Ill wait for a couple of weeks till 15.10 comes out.

Nice, but these dialogs are not clear at all. When I "withdraw" Bitcoin it doesnt show the conversion rate from CORE to Bitcoin (from looking at graphene.bitshares.org)

Also depositing Bitcoin gives TRADE.BTC - why should I prefer that over BitBTC? And the dialog should have a risk disclaimer about the TRADE.BTC UIA being vulnerable to couterparty risk.

+5% for Metaexchange integration - competition is good escpecially because Meta seems to give tighter spreads!

What do you mean?

All the 2.0 documentation i have read still defines 200% collateral. If not can you show me?

If you go here:
https://graphene.bitshares.org/#/exchange/trade/USD_CORE

In the "Borrow" button dialog, there is a scroll bar that lets you slide your collateral ratio for newly shorted BitAssets.

General Discussion / Re: Beyond Bitcoin Worker Proposal? (Poll)

Every worker proposal should pass the litmus test:

Will this make BitShares deflationary sooner or later?

So I voted no.

Luckily we have an elected committee to set the appropriate fees.

Openledger / Re: CCEDK introduces OpenLedger, Launch October 13th, 2015

Really excited to see the custom web wallet. It shows a lot of confidence in the underlying 2.0 tech that youre releasing the same day that 2.0 is launching.

This could be the first time we ever see a regular exchange with a blockchain backend. Super cool.

Technical Support / Private BitAssets open to manipulation?
« on: October 09, 2015, 08:25:14 pm »
1) Create private BitAsset
2) Provide the price feed and wait for it to become popular
3) Go short bigtime
4) Set the price feed to zero and cover for nothing
5) Profit!

What am I missing here? Do we have only the issuer's reputation to prevent this?

General Discussion / Re: Hoarding bitshares (the Cryptocurrency death)
« on: October 07, 2015, 08:51:44 pm »
A crypto will make people want to hoard it (a good thing) if its fees earned are greater than its expenses, i.e. if it is deflationary. If it inflates thereby continuously requiring subsidy from new buyers, then eventually its price will collapse (as it should).

If BitShares provides a decent trading experience then it will collect enough fees to be deflationary and we can all benefit as sharehoarders.

...I hope.

General Discussion / Re: Ethereum price discussion

Hello Ethereum pros,

how can I buy BTS using my pre-sale ether account. Any instructions or links will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

I dont know anything about Ether accounts, but I guess you sell your Ether at an exchange for BTC, and buy BTS? poloniex.com has liquid BTC->ETH/BTS markets.

Has anyone doing short term trading considered tax implications?  Do you think you have to pay short term gains on BTS/BTC trades?  If thats the way it works it may be an accounting nightmare.

Do you have a capital gains allowance in the US?

We have short term and long term capital gains... anything held over a year is long term.  Long term is substantially less percentage than short.

What I'm wondering is about making trades in the crypto world.  Are all crypto's considered the same, and you just take taxes out after you convert back to fiat no matter how many cross crypto trades you had during that time?

I read up somewhere that the IRS have already made a ruling that swapping from one crypto currency to another is considered a "taxable event", so no you have to keep a record every time you make a crypto trade, or else you go to the slammer.

Some here have theorized that trading inside the BitShares blockchain wouldnt be a taxable event, but to me that sounds like wishful thinking. In the UK however gambling is not taxable, so I think you could argue that trading inside BTS is like gambling.

General Discussion / Re: Who is running Private BitAsset feeds in 2.0?
« on: September 26, 2015, 07:11:22 pm »
Do you think there will be a market for reliable feed providers?

Assuming that the new collateral rules in 2.0 are conducive to easily liquidity, if you can provide reliable private feeds then it should be a nice little earner for the provider. Trading derivatives of stocks from inside BitShares - yes please!

General Discussion / Who is running Private BitAsset feeds in 2.0?
« on: September 26, 2015, 06:17:21 pm »
Has anyone confirmed they will be running private feeds in 2.0?

Will there be private BitAssets for
-Altcoins?
-Stocks?
-Indexes?

Btw incentivizing good private BitAsset providers by paying them the transaction fees is genius. Economic incentives is where BitShares really stands out from the rest.

For market issued assets (bitUSD) you need witnesses to publish feeds and I am fairly certain that have of all witnesses will be required to do so in order to activate the market

So market pegged asset price feeds will be a median of half of 17 (last figure I read) witnesses - Is that enough to prevent potential manipulation of the price feed?
